Polestar Has Built A What Now?

It’s called Koja, Swedish for “hut” or “den”.

Ever since Polestar became a standalone brand, it has garnered wows for its beautiful electric cars from all over the world. And after its first two modes, the 1 and 2, the Swedish firm is all set to unveil the third chapter in October this year. But, this piece isn’t about Polestar’s brief EV-making history. It’s actually about a tree house design that participated in last year’s global design competition – Polestar Design Contest.

It’s called Koja, a micro space tree house. The word Koja means “hut” or “den” in Swedish. The model was designed by Kristian Talvitie and built in the village of Fiskars, an art and design hub in southwestern Finland. Polestar was so impressed with the details that it decided to make a full-scale version of the model tree house. That’s something the EV-maker hasn’t done before.

Here’s what Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar, said about Koja:

We were fascinated by the idea and how it translates our brand values into a different environment. That was key for us, and we were so impressed that we decided to build it.

So, what’s so special about Koja? The basic idea is that people can reconnect with nature without travelling long distances. The real kicker is how it’s built. Koja has a blend of a modern design with sustainable materials. For instance, locally-sourced wood and wool are used, which should contribute to cosy living. Koja attaches to a tree trunk below the canopy and delivers a panoramic view of the surroundings.

If you want to check it out in the flesh, Koja is part of the ‘House by an Architect’ exhibition during the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale, open until September 2022. And as for the 2022 Polestar Design Contest, that’ll launch in July itself.
