This Is The Polestar 3

It will debut in October 2022.

You have to agree that Polestar’s first two models, the 1 and 2, are intriguing, to say the least. But, neither offered the critical ingredients of a hugely popular recipe – riding higher off the ground in a more hunky silhouette. In other words, an SUV. However, that will change in October 2022 as the brand confirms the world premiere of its first electric performance SUV – the Polestar 3. And what you here is the finished product. Yes, it’s more of a crossover in shape than a boxy SUV.

Somehow, I find that the Polestar 3 has a very reassuring design language. I like the wheels, the taillamp that runs across the body’s width and the dual-tone paint job. I also dig the flush door handles and the protective cladding that intrudes deeper into the doors at the centre. What I’m not sure about is the vented bonnet lip. But that must be there for a purpose more important than aesthetics alone.

Of course, most of the details are still under wraps. But we know that in due course, Polestar 3 will offer autonomous highway piloting using a LiDAR sensor from Luminar and pack NVIDIA computing power. Also, the electric SUV will boast a dual-motor propulsion system mated to a battery large enough to offer over 600km of range (WLTP). Polestar has even released a short film. Check it out:

So, the question is, when will it be up for grabs? Those residing in the initial launch markets can expect the booking counter to open the same day as the world premiere. As for the production, that’s expected to commence early next year. Polestar will manufacture its first SUV in the United States and China. Hence, it is safe to assume that both those markets will be part of the first launch phase.

Polestar has set a couple of other ambitious targets. First, starting with the 3, it aims to launch one new model every year for the next three years. And second, it plans to expand its presence to at least 30 global markets by the end of 2023. Both these goals are vital for the brand as it intends to grow its worldwide sales ten-fold from close to 29,000 in 2021 to approximately 290,000 by 2025.
