Maserati launches an electric offensive with three Folgore EV cars

The first Maserati EV – the GranTurismo Folgore does the 0-100kph sprint in 2.7secs

Folgore means lightning in Italian and Maserati has fittingly decided to choose it to christen all its electric cars with it. April 2024 saw the Italian carmaker launch the electrified iterations of its Grecale mid-sized SUV, GranTurismo grand tourer and GranCabrio convertible, christened the Grecale Folgore, GranTurismo Folgore and GranCabrio Folgore respectively.

By early 2024, Maserati announced its plans to make the brand entirely all-electric by 2028 and April 2024 sees the launch of the GranTurismo Folgore, the first all-electric car of the Trident. This all-electric grand tourer’s powertrain is developed with Formula E-derived technology, embedding a tri-electric-motor setup – one in front and two at the rear. Combined with an 800-volt architecture that enables a claimed range of 450kms, the GranTurismo Folgore produces 752hp with a 0-100kph sprint time of 2.7secs.

Visually, there’s little that differentiates the Folgore from the standard GranTurismo and GranCabrio trim. Closed-off vents on the front bumper, a tweaked rear bumper with exhaust elements deleted, a revised slatted front grille with tweaked tri-fender vents and Folgore badging summarise the visual revisions on the Folgore variant of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio.

The GranCabrio possesses similar power outputs as its hard-top sibling but with the added charisma of a drop-top design. What works for the GranCabrio Folgore is exclusivity as the current automotive market boasts only a handful of convertible BEVs barring this Maserati EV.

The Grecale Folgore boasts comparatively subtle power figures of a 4.1sec sprint time to 100kph courtesy of a 550hp power output. While it may be down on power, it supersedes its grand touring cousins on available range attribute with 500kms, as claimed by Maserati. With this, the Grecale Folgore becomes the first Maserati EV SUV as well as the most powerful Grecale.

The standard Folgore-spec visual cues from the GranTurismo Folgore find their way on the Grecale as well along with new EV-spec rims on all Folgore cars. Air suspension is now standard on the Grecale Folgore. And, customers can now spec their Folgore cars with ECONYL – a regenerative nylon fibre obtained from recycled fishing nets and plastics.
