2027 Porsche Taycan Gets E-Shift & Smarter Tech

The updated Porsche Taycan gains virtual gearshifts, smarter infotainment, and a more emotional driving experience. But the Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo wagons are officially gone.

Porsche recently unveiled the updated Taycan for the 2027 model year, and this is not just a software polish job with a few nicer menus thrown in. Porsche’s electric performance car now gets a new E-Shift system with virtual gear changes, a more emotive Electric Sport Sound, upgraded infotainment, faster wireless charging, and improved charging hardware.

However, there is also a slightly painful bit of news for wagon lovers. The Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo have been discontinued for the 2027 model year, which means Porsche’s electric estate/shooting brake innings has come to an end in several markets. That is a shame, because in a world drowning in SUVs, the Taycan wagons had the sort of quiet cool that didn’t need to shout from a rooftop.

The Taycan remains a landmark car for Porsche. Launched as the brand’s first fully electric production model, it proved that an EV could still feel like a proper Porsche rather than a very fast household appliance. With the 2027 update, Porsche seems to be chasing one very specific target: making electric performance feel more emotional.

What Is The Porsche Taycan E-Shift All About?

The headline feature on the new Taycan is Porsche’s new E-Shift system. Available as an option across all Taycan variants and standard on the Taycan Turbo GT, E-Shift simulates the sensation of going through the gears in an electric car.

In manual mode, the driver can use paddles on the GT sports steering wheel to shift through eight virtual gears. The system adds noticeable shift jerks, gear-specific drag torque, a virtual rev limiter, a rev counter, a gear indicator, and shift lights in the instrument cluster. In simpler terms, Porsche has given the Taycan a pretend gearbox, but in the most Porsche way possible.

This is not about improving acceleration. The Taycan was never exactly struggling there. Depending on the variant, the current Taycan line-up can produce up to 1,108hp in the Turbo GT with Weissach Package, sprint from 0–100km/h in as little as 2.2 seconds, and reach a top speed of 305km/h. So, performance is covered. The point of E-Shift is to improve driver involvement.

Electric cars are brutally fast, but their power delivery can sometimes feel too clean, too linear, and almost too easy. E-Shift adds rhythm. It gives the driver something to do, something to hear, and something to feel. This is Porsche trying to put some mechanical theatre back into the EV experience, without bringing back pistons, valves, or oil changes.

The Porsche Electric Sport Sound has also been reinterpreted. It now changes depending on load, wheel speed, and the selected virtual gear. Porsche says each Taycan variant gets its own acoustic and driving profile, so a Taycan GTS and a Turbo GT should not feel or sound identical.

New Porsche Digital Interaction System

Inside, the 2027 Taycan gets Porsche’s latest infotainment generation, called Porsche Digital Interaction. This system was first seen in newer electric Porsche models like the Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric, and it now makes its way into the Taycan.

The new Porsche Communication Management system is said to offer up to five times the computing power of the previous setup. That should mean faster responses, smoother menu transitions, and less of the digital hesitation that can make even expensive cars feel a little budget at traffic lights.

The Themes app adds another layer of personalisation, allowing owners to choose different colour worlds for the digital interface and ambient lighting. Porsche has also expanded Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, added over-the-air updates for the infotainment system, and improved the navigation system with more precise route calculation, 3D building displays, and an optimised Charging Planner.

How Fast Does The New Porsche Taycan Charge?

The 2027 Taycan also gets a new smartphone tray with a magnetic ring mount and wireless charging output of up to 25W. Porsche says this makes phone charging around 1.5 times faster than before.

In some markets, Porsche has also made the larger Performance Battery Plus standard on Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S variants. This 105kWh battery pack supports DC fast charging at up to 320kW on compatible 800V chargers. The new Taycan also gets a new battery state-of-health display, giving owners a clearer idea of long-term battery condition.

For charging hardware, some 2027 Taycan models now feature a native NACS DC fast-charging port on the passenger-side fender, while the driver-side fender retains the AC charging port. However, market-specific specifications may vary.

What Are The Updates On The Taycan Turbo GT?

For buyers who treat lap times as a personality trait, Porsche has also confirmed further track-focused hardware for the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package. The Manthey Kit can now be added to the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package.

It includes aerodynamic changes, a revised wheel and tyre package, larger front brakes, updated suspension tuning, and powertrain calibration aimed at improving circuit performance. A Taycan Turbo GT equipped with the Manthey Kit recently recorded a 6:55.553-minute lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. That is proper performance car territory.

Taycan Cross Turismo & Sport Turismo Discontinued

The most emotional part of this update is not the E-Shift system. It is the disappearance of the Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo from the lineup for 2027. The Cross Turismo was the more adventurous Taycan wagon, with raised ride height, rugged body cladding, all-wheel drive, and a more lifestyle-focused character. The Sport Turismo kept the sleeker wagon silhouette but without the off-road-inspired details.

Both cars gave Porsche something rare in the EV market: a fast electric wagon. The Cross Turismo in particular had a brilliant mix of performance, practicality, and understated cool. It was not a big SUV, not a normal sedan, and not another anonymous electric crossover. It was a Porsche estate with serious pace, proper usability, and just enough oddball charm to make enthusiasts pay attention.

Depending on the variant, the Taycan Cross Turismo offered up to 952hp in Turbo S form, a 0–100km/h time of around 2.5 seconds, and enough boot space to make it far more practical than the sedan. That made it one of the most interesting electric family cars on sale.

Unfortunately, interesting does not always mean high-volume. Wagons remain a niche choice in many markets, and electric wagons are an even smaller niche. Porsche now appears to be simplifying the Taycan line-up and focusing on the sedan body style.

2027 Porsche Taycan Availability

Porsche says the 2027 model year Taycan is now available to order from Porsche Centres. UAE pricing and exact specifications are yet to be confirmed, so local equipment, charging hardware, battery availability, and option packages may vary.

The updated Taycan sedan remains the core model in the line-up. Buyers can expect a sharper digital experience, more emotional driving features, and the same impressive electric performance that made the Taycan one of the most convincing performance EVs on the market.

For those who still want the Taycan Cross Turismo or Sport Turismo, the clock may already be ticking. Availability will likely depend on remaining stock, regional supply, or the used-car market.
