Formula one : Verstappen takes the pole
Max Verstappen takes the pole by only 29 mils over Charles Leclerc, and will be the first to start the sprint race, which promises to be a high tension one
The flying Dutchman
He managed to score another pole position at home, at the Red Bull Ring, in front of thousands of orange fans who came to witness the Dutchman’s triumph once again. A tense final qualifying run after two red flags (see below), the Ferrari who were not expected to take the pole still gave Verstappen cold sweats by finishing 2nd for Charles Leclerc and 3rd, Carlos Sainz.
The Mercedes :another brick in the wall…
Toto Wolff believed it at the start of Q3, Hamilton was in great shape during the first two sessions by signing the best time of Q1. Unfortunately, the happiness was very short-lived as he tried to improve his time, the Briton hit the wall in sector 3 and deprived himself of a 104th pole position. The same fate befell his compatriot, George Russell, who ended up in the gravel trap a few minutes later and nevertheless finished 5th in these sprint qualifications.
McLaren at the bottom of the barrel
Huge disappointment for McLaren who did not manage to go beyond Q2 today, Daniel Ricciardo will start 16th tomorrow after a complicated session for the Australian. Nothing goes well for the McLaren driver, who once again is beaten by Lando Norris and shows great signs of weakness in the car.Â
