HiPhi Z is a futuristic grand tourer EV from China

It gets an AI bot with a robotic arm and 705kms of range

Human Horizons. The name may resonate with a biotechnology firm, but in reality, it’s the rising Chinese car company that recently broke through the global auto scene. Founded in 2017, the Chinese startup based in Shanghai projects itself as an autonomous driving technology developer that also manufactures EVs under the HiPhi brand. The brand came into the limelight when it launched the HiPhi X SUV a couple of years ago, and now it has a four-door grand tourer in its hands.

It’s called the HiPhi Z, and the company claims it “looks, feels, and drives like a car from 20 years in the future”. Evidently, the pictures should tell you it’s hard to argue with them on the design aspect, especially with its cutting-edge light setup, muscular haunches over the wheels, and aggressive slashes throughout the car, including the futuristic rear-end that compliments its coupe roofline.

The Chinese equipped the HiPhi Z with a world-first Star-Ring ISD wraparound light curtain comprising 4066 individual LEDs that can interact with passengers, drivers and other bystanders by displaying banners. The four-door GT car even gets active grille shutters connected with the rear spoiler to adjust vehicle drag automatically.

On the inside, Human Horizons says it designed the sedan’s cabin to resemble “an ultra-futuristic spaceship”. The dashboard also sees the fitment of HiPhi Bot – an AI companion that can alter car settings on the driver’s commands. The bot even gets a robotic arm capable of performing “a variety of delicate movements with barely a noise”.

The powertrain options for the HiPhi Z resemble the ones found on the HiPhi X SUV. Customers can have a 300hp single motor powering the rear axle or a 600hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The battery pack on the Z will be bigger than the one found in X, with a 120kWh pack promising a 705km range.

Human Horizons revealed the HiPhi Z would be priced somewhere between $89,000–$129,000 though official figures and delivery dates will be announced at the Chengdu Auto Show in August. While there is no word on the HiPhi Z’s availability in global markets, interested Chinese customers can book a test drive through the HiPhi App.
