Alpine will not rely on Lotus for its electric A110

The French brand then intends to multiply the number of models in order to recover the development costs of such a platform

It’s decided, the electric A110 will be a pure Alpine product. Luca De Meo, CEO of the Renault Group, has confirmed to Autocar that the French brand will “build its own platform”. But assembling a car platform logically costs a fortune, which the group will have to cover in full. To absorb the massive investment in development, Alpine will be forced to produce more models.

Five new cars in five years

According to Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi, five new vehicles are already in the pipeline. The first of these will be the long-awaited production version of the Alpine a290_β, which is none other than the sporty variant of the future Renault 5. In 2025, it will be the turn of the first Alpine SUV, code named GT-X Over, to enter the scene. This compact crossover will compete with the Polestar 3 and the Lotus Eletre.

The electric replacement for the beloved A110 will not arrive until 2026. It will have its work cut out for it, as it will be competing head-on with the future Porsche 718, which will also convert to electric power. Finally, Alpine will further expand its range with two large SUVs for the American market.

A new collaboration with Lotus is not out of the question

Alpine teamed up with Lotus in 2021 to jointly produce a platform dedicated to electric models. The idea was a good one, since the two brands shared the same values, with a portfolio of compact, lightweight sports cars. As a result of this happy marriage, the electric A110 was to be based on the same underpinnings as the Lotus Type 135. In the end, this will not happen, although De Meo says that “it doesn’t mean we don’t have opportunities to work together again”. In other words, a new collaboration with Lotus cannot be ruled out.
