Wibledon (R4) : Nadal relentless, Kyrgios in pain and Halep continues to impress

All you need to know about the last Round 4th men and women matches

In pain, Kyrgios eliminates Nakashima

On the paper, Nick Kyrgios was the favourite, especially after playing a high quality match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Against 20-year-old American Brandon Nakashima, Kyrgios lost the first set, and what’s more, began to touch his shoulder and manipulate it with a grimace. In the next set, the Australian called in the physio and was given painkillers. He then managed to drastically raise his level on serve and won the second and third sets. In the fourth set, he ended up dropping his service games to the San Diego native. In the final set, Nick Kyrgios came out swinging, breaking the 56th-ranked player twice, mentally and with skill, to advance to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Final score: 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in 3h11.

Garin overturns De Minaur !

The match between Goffin and Tiafoe on Sunday became the longest match of this Wimbledon 2022 with a duration of 4h37. Well, that record didn’t stand for long. Chilean Cristian Garin beat the Aussie Alex De Minaur in 4 hours and 38 minutes. A minute more, but a record nonetheless. Garin, ranked 43rd in the world, managed to topple the Aussie after losing the first two sets, for a final victory 2-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. The win means that he has now reached the quarter-finals of his career in the Grand Slam, a feat which he did better than last year at Wimbledon (1/8th). He will face another Australian, Nick Kyrgios, who’s the last Aussie man standing.

Fritz unrolls…

Kyrgios was the last Aussie in the running, yes, because apart from De Minaur, Kubler was still involved. The man who had hesitated some time ago to stop his playing career (due to his six knee operations) to become a trainer however lost, his good run having come to an end against Taylor Fritz. The American, seeded n°11, defeated Jason Kubler in three sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in the middle of the afternoon. The 24-year-old native of Rancho Santa Fe, California, will also play his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

…And Nadal joins him

The more the rounds go on in this Wimbledon, the more Rafael Nadal takes his marks and shows himself to be irresistible. The proof : he didn’t lose a set in the last two matches, against the top seeds Sonego (27th) and Van De Zandschulp (21st). He beat the latter 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 in 2 hours and 24 minutes. Against Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals, the Manacor bull will have the opportunity to take revenge on the the Indian Wells Masters 1000 final where the Californian won on his home ground (6-3, 7-6). See you on Wednesday for a match that promises to be a great one.

In the women’s table, Halep crushes Badosa

On Centre Court, it was Simona Halep in her glory days. Having won her second Grand Slam on this same court in 2019, the Romanian, ranked 18th in the world, is hoping to repeat this performance. She was up against Spain’s Paula Badosa, but there was also a world of difference. Halep dispatched the Spaniard in the space of an hour (6-1, 6-2). Although the Romanian was impressive, Badosa disappointed in what was expected to be THE clash of the women’s round of 16. In the quarter-finals, Halep will face American Anisimova.

Anisimova and Tomljanovic qualified, no more French women at Wimbledon

Amanda Anisimova faced the French surprise, Harmony Tan. Despite her good form, the Parisian, who beat Serena Williams in the first round, was eliminated in the round of 16 against another American. No new feat for Tan, the 20th ranked player in the world Anisimova won without any hesitation (6-2, 6-3) and joined Halep in the quarters.

Alizé Cornet, who defeated record holder Iga Swiatek, started well against Ajla Tomljanovic, winning the first set (6-4). However, she lost the second set by the same score when she had the break in hand at 4-4. Then, she lost the last set 3-6, preventing her from reaching the quarter-finals. Tomljanovic was able to turn the tide in a pivotal moment with a few dazzling forehands and backhands to clinch her spot. The Australian will face Kazakh Elena Rybakina. The world No. 23 defeated Croatian Petra Martic (7-5, 6-3) in the afternoon.
