British watch brands Studio Underd0g and Fears Watch Company Limited – known as “Fears” – have collaborated to unveil The Gimlet, a cushion-case three-hand watch “with a lime twist.”

Studio Underd0g was founded during the pandemic by Richard Benc. Officially launched in March 2021, it is one of Britain’s youngest and most dynamic watch brands.
“Fears is one of Britain’s oldest family-run watch companies, first established in 1846 by Edwin Fear in Bristol. The business ran for 130 years until it closed in 1976. In 2016, the year the business would have celebrated its 170th anniversary, it was re-established by Edwin Fear ‘s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill. Fears today is located in its historical home city of Bristol, where the watches are designed, before being hand built in Britain.”
Key Features
Functions and Operation

Image: Classic and elegant three-hand watch. Real magic of The Gimlet is its dial.
Central hours, minutes, and seconds.
Hacking seconds for precise time-setting.
All operations via the crown at 3 o’clock.
Dial
Image: The entire base dial is coated with lume, and not hands and hour-markers as is usually done. The effect is super cool.
Features a multi-layer dial.

Image: Excellent dial design and execution.
Top dial is made from a 1 mm thick sapphire crystal.
12 hour-markers (combination of Arabic numerals and baton-shaped markers) and an hour and minute scale graduated in increments of 5 minutes each, encircle the top dial.
Base dial is made from brass and coated with seven layers of Super-LumiNova.
Hour and minute hands are skeletonised.
“The pale green gradient dial has been achieved by using current-day machining techniques and modern materials. It is made up of a base dial featuring 7 layers of custom-made Super-LumiNova pigment. The application of this pigment is incredibly time-consuming as each layer must completely dry before the next is applied.
Mounted on top of the base dial, is a 1mm sapphire disc, atop is adorned with the co-branding, minute track and Arabic numerals. Once these two dials are affixed to one another via two slotted head pins, it creates a crisp dial with a silky depth, akin to its namesake.”

Image: Floating effect.
“In daylight, the printing details appear to float, casting a shadow on the lower base dial. As the watch moves around in relation to the light source, the shadows move accordingly, resulting in a dynamic and ever-changing appearance. In darkness, the printing details are backlit by the bright Super-LumiNova base dial and appear to be totally disconnected from any surface.”

Our Thoughts
Image: A well executed watch and immense value for its price point.
The Gimlet is a collaboration between two British brands that could not be more different from each other.
Studio Underd0g has taken the world of horology by storm. We covered them twice – the new 01Series Generation 3 models and The Uneggspected Series. Their watches are fun, colourful, bright, and remind us not to take life too seriously.
Fears Watch Company Limited or “Fears,” is a historical name in British watchmaking that has been reborn during the past few years. The brand eyes a bright future crafting desirable and classy watches with a global appeal.

Image: Most fun watch at GTGs.
The Gimlet is a super cool watch, one I would love to own. Its proportions are perfect, and having a dial coated in lume makes for a great deal of fun and conversation at watch GTGs. Its Sellita movement will be serviceable by a competent watchmaker years from now. Being limited to 200 pieces ensures its rarity. The Gimlet is a welcome addition to almost any watch collection. The hard part will be getting your hands on one.
