India Gets Eighth 50 Jahre M Edition

It’s the M5 Competition that has received the celebratory treatment.

If you’re unaware, BMW is celebrating 50 years of its Motorsport division in 2022. It’s popularly known by the single letter M. How? By introducing limited-run versions of its models, all bearing the same suffix – 50 Jahre M Edition. India has been receiving them as well, and the latest to join the list is the M5 Competition 50 Jahre M Edition. It’s the eighth celebratory model, and two more will be launched before 2022 comes to a close.

BMW has slapped an ex-showroom price tag of approximately INR 1.80 crore on the cosmetically-enhanced derivative, about INR 6 lakh more than the donor product. So, apart from exclusivity, what do you get for the extra amount? On the outside, the special edition packs M Lights in Shadowline spec, a 50 M Jahre emblem, BMW’s Comfort Access System, soft-closing doors, black 20-inch wheels and M Compound Brakes with red callipers.

Indoors, the M5 Competition 50 Jahre M Edition boasts aluminium carbon trim with pearl chrome accents coupled with dual-tone brown-black upholstery. And the only colour option for the body is Aventurine Red metallic, which isn’t available with the standard M5 Competition.

As hinted above, the limited-run model is mechanically identical to the standard sports saloon. That means under the hood is a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that pumps out 625hp/750Nm. The oomph goes to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-100kmph sprint time of 3.3 seconds. The car can hit 200kmph from a standstill in 10.8 seconds, before reaching its electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph. That, however, can be raised to 305kmph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Like the engine, the rest of the package remains the same as the standard M5 Competition. The long list of features includes BMW Laserlight tech, automatic tailgate operation, four-zone automatic climate control, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, powered and heated front seats, and two 12.3-inch displays – one for the instrument cluster and the other for infotainment purposes.

If you’re a hardcore BMW fan, nothing else will offer you a better package. However, if you looking for other similarly powered cars, there are options available. The list includes the Audi RS 7 Sportback and the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S.
