De Tomaso unveils the 900hp V12-powered P900 hypercar

The P900 hypercar’s V12 can revv to over 12,000rpm. Or you can opt for a F1-derived V10 engine

One glance at this hypercar’s rear gives the impression that this must be a Batmobile iteration but made street-legal. But neither is it a bespoke one-off Batmobile derivative nor a street-legal vehicle. Limited to 18 units, this is a track-spec 900hp P900 hypercar from recently resurrected Italian carmaker De Tomaso. The 900hp and 900 kg dry weight lend it its name, and each P900 commands a ludicrous price of $3 million.

Built around a unique carbon fiber chassis, the exterior design draws heavily over the P72, De Tomaso’s first production model since its comeback. The outrageous bodywork with extensively swooping and aerodynamic side profile alone may amass one-third of the price. But the P900 adopts a more extreme visual approach with its enormous rear wing, a diffuser and a front splitter that mirrors the rear wing in proportions and massive rear fenders along with ripped front fenders that aid aerodynamics. An absolute head-turner.

The other half comes courtesy of the powertrain, which bears no resemblance to the P72. While the latter boasts a 5.0-litre V8, the new P900 will benefit from a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V12 producing 900hp and revving up to 12,300 rpm. Who said V12s are dead?

De Tomaso claims the engine will be manufactured in Germany and be the lightest and shortest V12 ever. Keeping the fuel crisis in mind, the carmaker has confirmed this V12’s ability to run on carbon-neutral synthetic fuels. With this, De Tomaso joins the elite group of Porsche and Formula 1 to adopt alternative fuels to sustain the combustion engine. Though, this V12 will only be ready by 2024 and customers with lower patience can opt for a V10 engine built by Judd Power, a descendant of the V10 engine deployed in a 1997 Benetton F1 car. Performance figures for either iteration haven’t been disclosed, but De Tomaso states the P900 will be rear-wheel-drive and equip an Xtrac sequential gearbox.

De Tomaso would also conduct a racing series for the P900 called De Tomaso Competizione. This will allow owners to gain motorsports tutoring and a chance to race their P900s on racetracks around the world with a support team comprising mechanics and engineers. The first batch of P900s with a V10 engine will arrive by 2023, and the V12 releasing the following year.
