All-new Hyundai Tucson unveiled in India with ADAS technology

It gets futuristic looks, an overhauled cabin and a host of segment-first features

The car launches of 2022 and the accompanying advent of new technology put the Indian audience on notice. Last month, Toyota unveiled its first-ever strong hybrid B-segment SUV for India, the urban cruiser Hyryder. And now, Hyundai debuts the fourth-generation Tucson in India, the brand’s first car to offer Level 2 ADAS systems.

Hyundai unveiled the fourth-generation Tucson globally in September 2020 in two guises, short and long wheelbase. India would receive the long-wheelbase Tucson to please our spacious cabin-loving masses. While the Tucson never really accumulated decent sales figures in India, courtesy of well-equipped and reputed segment rivals, this fourth-generation model with its futuristic looks and longer, wider dimensions might be the change Hyundai wishes to see.

The looks of the new Tucson see a complete overhaul from its predecessor. The new dark chromed grille with hidden LED DRLs might be the dealbreaker for customers looking for a visually appealing car. The rear with a sharply cut tail light setup and a light bar spanning the width of the car projects this fossil-fuel-powered Tucson to resemble an EV, thereby extending the Tucson’s appeal.

The story is similar on the inside, with a heavily revamped dashboard that bears no resemblance to its predecessor. The new dual-tone black-light grey interiors see a brand new layout crowned by the segment-best 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the middle. The instrument cluster is a modern free-standing digital unit spanning 10.25-inches, equipped with personalised themes and turn-by-turn navigation directions. The centre console sees the elimination of most buttons, barring the seat ventilation function and some others. Even the automatic climate control configuration panel is an all-touchscreen affair.

Hyundai is known to be generous with features on its offerings, and Tucson is no different. Creature comforts such as dual-zone climate control, 10-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, hands-free smart tailgate, 64-colour ambient lighting, 360-degree cameras, 8-speaker Bose audio system find a home on the Tucson.

The new Tucson becomes the first Hyundai in India and the only one in its segment to offer Level 2 ADAS technology. This enables the premium SUV to bring a suite of advanced safety functions such as forward collision warning, blind-spot assist, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert and more

While the design and functionalities are all-new, the powertrain elements are lifted off its affordable seven-seater sibling, the Alcazar. The new Tucson can be had in both petrol and diesel engine options, with the former being an Alcazar-sourced 156hp 2.0-litre unit while the latter is a 186hp 2.0-litre diesel mill. The petrol engine can only be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, while an 8-speed auto gearbox is unique to the diesel. No manual transmission is on offer though one can opt for an all-wheel-drive variant which further provides the user with drive modes such as Snow, Mud and Sand.

August 2022 will witness Hyundai unveil the prices for the new Tucson SUV. Upon launch, it will rival the likes of Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Mahindra XUV700 and the Citroen C5 Aircross.
