A Diesel BMW Gets The Manhart Touch

The tuner calls the finished product the MH3 400d.

Manhart usually takes powerful petrol cars and adds more spices to the recipe. Recent examples include an SL spruced up to 707hp, an M3 Touring outputting 650hp and an equally oomph-ed-up Range Rover Sport. However, something unusual has popped up now – a Manhart-tuned diesel sedan. The tuner calls the finished product the MH3 400d.

If you aren’t aware of the German tuning company’s naming nomenclature, you’d probably find it difficult to zero down on the exact model. Let me help – it’s a BMW M340d (G20). From the BMW factory, this diesel-powered sedan comes with a turbocharged 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine that offers 340hp/700Nm. That’s enough for a standard sprint time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 250kmph.

The Manhart MH3 400d boasts a Mhtronik powerbox, which ups the output to 380hp/770Nm. How that affects the performance figures is a mystery. But the extra punch should help outpace the standard M340d. And the tuning job includes a custom rear silencer with valve control and four 90mm tailpipes, delivering a distinctive soundtrack.

Of course, the finished Manhart project has to make a statement even if it is standing still and not burning any fuel. For that, the Wuppertal-based firm has garnished the sedan with silver and red stripes of the Manhart decal set over the black base paint. Also, several carbon add-ons from the M Performance range have been added, including spoiler lips for the front and the boot lid and a diffuser. Manhart’s Concave One wheels in matt black, measuring 9×20 (with 255/30ZR20 tyres) at the front and 10.5×20 (with 27530XR20 tyres) at the rear, round off the exterior changes.

And to enhance the car’s driving dynamics, Manhart has equipped the MH3 400d with H&R springs. They lower the ride height at the front and rear by 40mm and 30mm, respectively. Indoors, the M sports seats have been tweaked with a carbon cover for the upper area of the back shells. Other changes inside the cabin include backlit Manhart-branded door sills and carbon shift paddles.

Even though it’s a diesel, the Manhart MH3 400d looks purposefully aggressive. What’s your take?
