Porsche Taycan has a new software update
It can be availed by all 2020 and 2021 model years
Smartphones, laptops and electric cars – Apart from being battery-powered, what do all these share between them? Software updates. These software updates will soon become the norm with EVs, optimising existing operations and upgrading features and performance. Porsche has readied a software update for the Taycan EV that essentially brings all previous model year units up to speed with the latest 2023 software state.
Porsche claims customers of the Taycan will benefit from the new software update and the resulting increased powertrain efficiency and new functions. “Following this update, anyone driving a Taycan from early in the car’s production run will be pleasantly surprised by how much has developed on the vehicle side since then,” says Kevin Giek, Vice President of Model Line Taycan.
The list of added features and functionalities depends on Taycan’s model year. The older the car is, the more improvements and innovations will be installed. For instance, the all-wheel-drive units from the 2020 and 2021 model years will benefit from complete front motor disconnection under partial load operation. It can be seen as an EV-equivalent of cylinder deactivation in ICE cars. The update further frees the front axle from driving torque while coasting or at a standstill to reduce frictional drag losses from the electric flywheel, increasing the vehicle’s driving range. Better thermal management allows the Taycan now to charge rapidly, even at low outside temperatures.
Porsche further develops new colourful tile graphics for the central screen. The all-wheel-drive indicator will now get represented in an energy-flow indicator. Spotify gets integrated on the central screen, and Android Auto is activated wirelessly. Charging stations can be filtered on the central screen, depending on the prevailing charging status. And the Heads up Display on the Taycan features an optimised view of the navigation map.
The software update also upgrades the ParkAssist function, offering a greater range as the software recognises the smaller parking spots too. Furthermore, all Taycan models from the 2020 and 2021 model years can now request the keyless opening function of the doors and the tailgate.
Apart from the software upgrades, Porsche Taycan customers can retrofit their EVs with the upgraded onboard 22W charger that allows faster charging. This retro fitment further enables Plug & Charge, which authorises payment without a card or app.
The update is free for customers and can be carried out during a visit to a Porsche service workshop.
