Wimbledon 2023 – Final : Alcaraz upsets Djokovic to win his second Grand Slam title !

The Spaniard triumphed over the Serb in five sets (1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4).

On this Sunday afternoon, young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz pulled off the greatest feat of his career. On Centre Court grass, he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, after an epic battle lasting 4 hours and 43 minutes.

What a moment in history ! An exceptional match for a legendary feat. It had been 10 years since the Serbian had known defeat on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, and Carlos Alcaraz had managed to topple Mount Djokovic. The Spaniard thus put an end to Nole’s four-year reign on the London grass, and, at 20, won the second major tournament of his young career, after last year’s US Open. And, of course, he remains on his throne as world number 1 in the ATP rankings. He achieved this feat after 4 hours 43 minutes, at the end of a fantastic tussle won 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

A 26 minutes game !

When he launched a final forehand to push Djokovic to the foul, Carlitos collapsed with joy, and rightly so. After a warrior’s match, he defeats the man who was thought to be unbeatable. And yet, it all started so badly. In the first set, you’d have thought he was off to a good start, but he quickly lost his way and the Serb corrected him 6-1. It was probably fear, and against someone as impassable as Djoko in recent years, it’s hardly surprising. But the young Spaniard has a mind of his own, and one thing leading to another, he starts to get more and more solid in the second set. In the tie-break, it was the Serb who cracked with some unusual unforced errors, as Alcaraz confirmed his rise to power. And this awakening was perfectly illustrated in the next set. With a break already in the bag, Carlos continued to hang on to Novak’s serve, taking him into an interminable game that was undoubtedly the turning point of the set. Because if the Spaniard hadn’t won this 26-minute game with 7 break points in his favor, the after-effects could have been devastating. And then, Carlitos capitalized on his momentum and went on to the third set win, 6-1. In the last two sets, the battle evened out once again, with the outcome we all know.

For the Djoker, it was a bitter failure. His dreams of a calendar Grand Slam have been dashed once again, and he will have to wait until at least next year before he can hope to equal Swiss Roger Federer’s record of 8 wins here at Wimbledon.
