New BMW X5 Launched In India

It’s available in four variants, two petrol and diesel each.

It was in February this year when BMW took the wraps off the refreshed X5 and X6. While there’s no word on the latter, the former has been launched in the Indian market. The new BMW X5 has four variants, two petrol and diesel each. Prices start at INR 93.90 lakh and go up to INR 1.07 crore (ex-showroom). All are being put together at BMW India’s plant in Chennai. Here’s the variant-wise price list:

• xDrive40i xLine: INR 93.90 lakh

• xDrive40i M Sport: INR 1.05 crore

• xDrive30d xLine: INR 95.90 lakh

• xDrive30d M Sport: INR 1.07 crore

Powering both 40i derivatives is a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine that pumps out 375hp/520Nm. With that powerplant, the new BMW X5 can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 5.4 seconds and reach 250kmph before the electronic speed limiter comes into play. Similarly, both diesel variants get their kick from the same engine – a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with 282hp/650Nm. That helps clock a 0-100kmph sprint time of 6.1 seconds, while the top speed is 233kmph.

By default, all variants of the new BMW X5 come with 8-speed automatic transmission, an active all-wheel-drive system and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which aids the primary powerplant with an extra 12hp/200Nm. According to BMW India, the new X5 can deliver up to 12kmpl, regardless of the variant.

Creature comforts? The standard features list includes Comfort Access System, auto headlamps and wipers, cruise control, panoramic glass roof, four-zone automatic climate control, wireless smartphone integration, BMW Gesture Control, 21-inch alloy wheels, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The costlier M Sport derivatives look slightly different with sportier touches and pack additional features. The list includes soft-closing doors, ventilated seats, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive 2-axle air suspension, a head-up display and an illuminated kidney grille.

The xLine variants are available in three colours – Mineral White, Black Sapphire and Skyscraper Grey. On the other hand, the M Sport derivatives can also be had in three additional shades – Carbon Black, Tanzanite Blue and Brooklyn Grey.

In India, the new BMW X5 renews its rivalry with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX. Out of the lot, only the BMW and the Mercedes-Benz SUVs are available with a diesel engine. The Lexus stands out, too, by being the only one with a strong-hybrid powerplant.
