US Open 2023: complete results of the men’s quarter-finals

The world’s top three Alcaraz, Djokovic, Medvedev and the surprise Shelton reach the semi-finals

Yesterday and Tuesday on the Arthur Ashe stadium court, the quarter-finals of the men’s draw delivered their verdict. In the New York heat, the top players on the circuit were convincing, as was American Ben Shelton. On Friday, they will meet in the semi-finals, for a place in the final.

Djokovic eats Fritz

Physically, the match was hard on both players due to the high temperatures on Tuesday afternoon. But tactically, there was no contest. Novak Djokovic gave Taylor Fritz no chance, and in addition made far too many unforced errors (51). The Serb dominated the American, ranked 9th in the world, from head to toe, and put him to the sword for three sets. The future world number 1 won the match 6-1/6-4/6-4, in 2h38.

Shelton wins the american battle against Tiafoe

This confrontation between compatriots was expected to be spectacular, and it was. And in the end, it was the younger and lower-ranked of the two Americans, Ben Shelton, who prevailed: 6-2/3-6/7-6/-6-2 in 3 hours and 09 minutes. Shelton, currently 47th in the ATP rankings, put in a solid performance, with some exceptional left-handed flashes. After the tiebreak in the third set, in which he had set points, world No.10 Frances Tiafoe was unable to raise his game against the rising star of American tennis. On Friday, Ben Shelton will face the immense challenge of taking on Novak Djokovic for a place in the final.

Medvedev’s mind at work against Rublev

Daniil Medvedev is back in the last four of the US Open. And to do so, he had to beat his childhood friend, Russian world No.8 Andrey Rublev. Medvedev won in three short sets (6-4, 6-3, 6-4) and 2h48 of play. The world No. 3 had to be mentally tough, and Rublev can bite his fingers off, as he so often does. History is repeating itself for Andrey Rublev. In each set, he has one or more breaks in his pocket, but ends up getting knocked down. More generally, it’s always the same story for him. He has reached the quarter-finals of every Grand Slam tournament, and does so regularly, but unfortunately never manages to reach the semi-finals.

Alcaraz crushes Zverev

Like last year, Carlos Alcaraz will be in the semi-finals. Last night on Arthur Ashe Court, the Spaniard dominated Germany’s Alexander Zverev: 6-3 / 6-2 / 6-4 in just 2 hours 24 minutes. The current world No. 1 (who loses his throne on Monday) was far too strong. Physically, tactically and technically. For the German, ranked 12th in the world, the epic five-set battle against Jannik Sinner, which lasted almost five hours, has probably left its mark. To defend his New York crown on Sunday, Alcaraz will first have to get past Daniil Medvedev.
