Two Special Mercedes G-Wagons Worth Checking Out

One is called the ‘Grand Edition’, while the other has the tag ‘Final Edition.

Mercedes-Benz has been producing civilian versions of the G-Class since 1979. That means it has been around, generation following generation, for 44 years. And over that period, several derivatives stood out and caught the attention of real enthusiasts. And what the German brand has done now is create two unique versions to celebrate such examples. One is based on the AMG G3 and carries the tag ‘Grand Edition’, while the other is a derivative of the G 500 and has ‘Final Edition’ in the name.

Mercedes-AMG G 63 Grand Edition

The first-ever G 63 debuted in 2002, 21 years ago. And since then, it has been the choice for most who prefer proper AMG-tuned G-Wagons. To celebrate that, Mercedes-Benz has created the Grand Edition. It’s a limited-run derivative with a 1,000-unit life. The first highlight is the black-and-gold paint scheme for the exterior, a theme carried indoors as well. The AMG logo, the Affalterbach emblem and the Mercedes star have been finished in a “kalaharigold magno” shade. The same colour is found on a few other bits and pieces, including the spare wheel inlay and ring.

The SUV rides on 22-inch AMG forged wheels with a cross-spoke design, finished in tech gold with a matt black central locking nut and tech gold Mercedes star. The same colour scheme is used for the “Grand Edition” tags. A customised AMG Indoor Car Cover is also part of the package. Also included are door sills with AMG lettering and illuminated borders, black nappa leather seats with gold stitching, plaques with gold AMG logos and gold edging, black mats with gold stitching, nappa leather roof grab handles, AMG Performance steering draped in Dinamica microfibre and multiple carbon trim pieces with copper thread.

Sadly, there are no mechanical upgrades to report. And at least from the exterior, the Grand Edition looks like a Manhart-tuned G-Wagon. The starting price of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Grand Edition is EUR 228,896.40.

Mercedes-Benz G 500 Final Edition

The first V8-powered G-Class, the 500 GE, debuted in 1993 – 30 years ago. And to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that derivative, Mercedes-Benz has conceived the G 500 Final Edition. And like the G 63 Grand Edition above, it carries over an unaltered mechanical setup from the standard version. That means a V8 offering 421hp. However, the Final Edition can only be had in three colours – obsidian black (metallic), opalith white magno and the new olive magno (both from the Manufaktur collection). The production is limited to 500 units in the three shades, totalling 1,500 units.

The G 500 Final Edition features 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, painted in the body colour and a high-sheen finish when the olive green paint is chosen. With the other two, the rims are high-sheened black. Other embellishments on the exterior include ‘Final Edition’ lettering on the spare wheel cover, doorknobs with embossed logos, a logo projector projecting ‘G’ and ‘Stronger Than Time’ and multiple trim pieces with high-gloss chrome accents.

The vehicle also has a full Manufaktur leather package, matching the body colour. Nappa leather drapes most of the stuff, including the roof lining, the seats and the luggage compartment. Even sections of the seat adjustment switches have nappa leather covers. The lettering ‘Final Edition’ can be found on the grab handles and on the door sills, while there’s a silver coin, in the form of a plaque, attached to the back of the SUV’s key. The Active Multicontour Seat Package Plus is also included in the package.

The price for the Mercedes-Benz G 500 Final Edition is EUR 196,350.
