Ferrari’s XX race cars are now road-legal with the 1017hp SF90 Stradale XX and SF90 Stradale XX Spider

Limited to less than 1500 units and all sold out

Recent years have seen Ferrari doing things it has never done. The list got kickstarted with adopting a hybrid power plant, followed by unveiling the brand’s first-ever SUV and now a new XX model that isn’t limited to track use only. Presenting the Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider convertible – the first XX models from the prancing horse brand that can be enjoyed on public roads.

You can’t buy them if this is the first time you got aware of these models, as Ferrari will only be making 799 SF90 XX Stradale coupes and 599 SF90 XX Spiders, and all have been called for. But what you can procure is knowledge of the Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider’s capabilities, with the highlight figures comprising a 0-100kph acceleration time of 2.3 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the SF90 and a top speed of 199mph (or 320kph).

Ferrari continues to utilise the standard SF90’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 coupled with three electric motors hybrid powertrain on its XX derivatives but manages to extract more power from both sources. The V8 engine’s inlet and exhaust ports now get polished, along with an increase in compression ratio and new pistons getting swapped to put out 17 more horsepower. The tri-electric-motor setup also receives an Extra Boost feature that bumps the total power output of the SF90 Stradale XX to 1017hp, against 986hp in standard guise.

An eight-speed dual-clutch unit still performs the transmission duties with the addition of a software trickery that adds noise when changing gears, similar to the exhaust note when lifting off the throttle at high revs for added drama. Ferrari has further shifted some mechanicals to allow more engine noise to be heard inside the cabin. Though, one can still utilise the EV-only mode for noise and emissions-free travel with the EV range of 25 km and a 135 kph top speed remaining unchanged.

What isn’t unchanged is the exterior design, largely dominated by the emergence of multiple vents across the fenders, a splitter at the front and the fitment of a giant fixed rear wing as the most prominent element. The hood now features two added nostrils to redirect hot air from the car’s radiators to flow over the roof. The active spoiler from the standard SF90 is retained, but in the XX, it works with the bigger fixed wing for more downforce. Ferrari claims the SF90 Stradale XX can generate 1168 pounds of downforce at 155 mph, a massive leap from the regular SF90’s 860.

The fitment of the giant fixed rear wing further prompted Ferrari to elongate the entire rear end of the SF90 XX, that now exhibits a silhouette seen on longtails. The new outlets on the hood get painted in contrasting colours to stand out. The design of the vents on the car’s fenders are mimicked on the interior door panels. And while on the subject of the interior, only the necessary-to-the-performance bits have been retained, entailing the carpets are eliminated. The centre console features no leather or plastic but panels made out of carbon fibre, and so are the new monocoque bucket seats to save weight.

While it doesn’t matter anymore but for the curious audience, prices for the coupe hover around the $844,000 mark and around $932,000 for the Spider iteration.
