The new Mercedes Benz EQE SUV breaks cover!

The new Mercedes will rival the recently launched Polestar 3, Audi e-tron and BMW iX.

After a hiatus since 2018, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Paris Motor Show makes a comeback. However, German carmaker Mercedes Benz couldn’t wait for the show to commence as it launched the EQE SUV via a digital world premiere. The new EQE SUV is the fourth model to get inducted into Mercedes’ EQ range. The new car can be seen as the EV derivative of the GLE SUV or preferably as the electric iteration of the EQE electric sedan.

The new Mercedes EQE SUV is slightly shorter than its petrol-powered SUV sibling as well as the EQE saloon. Plus, a 3030mm wheelbase on the EQE SUV makes it nine centimetres shorter than its saloon counterpart and yet Mercedes remains adamant about the EQE SUV being the most spacious offering in its class. Even though the EQE SUV carries an ‘off-road’ drive mode, this essentially is a soft-roader more suited for city runs.

The car borrows design elements from its EQ stable counterparts. The grille-replacing gloss black panel along with the width-spanning light bar are common design traits in the entire range though the flowing silhouette on the EQE has been borrowed from the flagship EQS SUV. While buyers can have the petrol-powered GLE in five or seven seats, the EQE SUV is a strict five-seater.

The cabin is a typical Mercedes EQ affair with the option to equip the width-spanning MBUX hyperscreen that merges three screens into a seamless digital dashboard slab. Though a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen for the vertically-erected MBUX infotainment system gets offered as standard. The layout is akin to the other EQ family Mercedes cars, with a leather-stitched dashboard and turbine-like air-con vents flanking either side. The upholstery features leather-free options and ambient lighting is offered as standard.

The EQE SUV can further receive Over The Air updates to keep the software updated with the latest innovations from Mercedes Benz. This allows customers to create their custom EQE SUV by subscribing to various Mercedes Me virtual store offerings. For instance, an Individualization Package adds a Roaring Pulse soundscape, some mini-games, additional coming-home and leaving-home animations. More personalised options from the German brand to follow in the coming years.

Buyers will have three trims with various electric motor configurations, namely – 350+, 350 4Matic, and 500 4Matic. The 350+ will be powered by a 288hp single motor placed on the rear axle. The 350 4Matic adds an electric motor between the front wheels, hiking the torque output to 764Nm from the 565Nm torques available in the 350+, as the horsepower remains the same. The hp figure changes in the top-run 500 4Matic variant: offering 536hp and almost 900Nm torques from the dual-motor setup, allowing the EQE SUV to hit 100kph from a standstill in 4.6secs.

The EQE SUV gets powered by a 90.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Mercedes expects the EQE SUV to offer up to 550kms of driving range on a single charge. The 10-80 percent charge time takes just over half an hour, if using the 170kW fast charger.

The Mercedes Benz EQE SUV will reach the dealers by 2023. The main rivals to the EQE SUV comprise the BMW iX, the Audi e-tron and the recently launched Polestar 3 SUV.
