The Ioniq 6 Isn’t Just A Looker

Hyundai has revealed nearly all there is to know about its latest BEV.

About a couple of weeks ago, Hyundai unveiled the striking Ioniq 6. But that’s all it did, leaving auto enthusiasts without any specifications to munch. Well, that gap has now been filled as the Korean automaker has revealed nearly all there is to know about its latest BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle).

Platform and dimensions

I know the information under this section will bore some people to sleep. So, let’s keep it short and straightforward. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has an extended version of the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), which debuted with the Ioniq 5 crossover. The architecture is such that it allows for scalable battery sizes, a flat floor and rear- or all-wheel-drive options.

Let’s talk about some numbers. First, the Ioniq 6 has a wheelbase that stretches 2,950mm in length. Second, multiple wheel sizes are available, ranging from 18 to 20 inches. And three, the four-door EV measures 4,855mm in length, 1,880mm in width and 1,495mm in height. Those figures give a fair idea that the Ioniq 6 will be a roomy five-seater for living and non-living things.

Powertrain

As with the Ioniq 5, Hyundai has lined up multiple powertrain options for the Ioniq 6. The range-topping version will have a dual-motor setup, offering oomph to all four corners. With 321bhp/605Nm on tap, the car can hit 100kmph from nothing in 5.1 seconds. Sadly, the performance and power figures for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version remain undisclosed. By the power of deduction, however, one can refer to the Ioniq 5’s spec-sheet to get a pretty accurate idea.

Battery, charging and range

The similarities continue. There are two battery sizes on offer – 53 kWh and 77.4 kWh. Hyundai says that the larger battery with a rear-wheel-drive setup running on 18-inch wheels gives a WLTP-certified range of 610km. And here’s another equation for you. The 53 kWh battery, RWD and 18-inch wheels make the Ioniq 6 one of the most frugal EVs. According to WLTP, it uses less than 14 kWh of juice for every 100km.

The charging capability is equally impressive. Courtesy of the EV-specific architecture, the Ioniq 6 supports both 400V and 800V charging infrastructures, with the latter being the standard. Hyundai claims that with a 350kW charger, the EV can replenish its battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.

And here’s the really clever bit. Like the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 can lend its onboard battery power to external devices. Electronic devices aside, the list also includes stuff like camping equipment. For the latter, however, one would need a different adaptor from the options list.

Features

As you’d expect, the list is quite long. It includes a 12-inch digital instrument cluster right next to an equally-large touchscreen infotainment system, both residing in one rectangular house. Support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is available, along with Bluetooth multi-connection functionality. Other features include BlueLink connected-car tech, 64-colour ambient lighting with six pre-selected themes, four USB-C ports, one USB-A port and an 8-speaker Bose sound system.

Of course, there are a bunch of driver assistance systems available. The bucket includes Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Speed Limited Assist, Driver Attention Warning and Blind-Spot View Monitor.

Other details

Hyundai has lined up 12 exterior colour options for the Ioniq 6, including White, Blue, Red, Green and Black. On the other hand, there are four choices for the interior colour scheme – dark grey with light grey, dark olive green with light grey, black with pale brown and black.

Production of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 will commence in quarter three of 2022. Almost immediately, it will go on sale in its home country. Its introduction to other markets such as the USA and Europe will happen over the following months.
