The Girard-Perregaux Neo Constant Escapement Only Watch Edition 2023

Girard-Perregaux has been a consistent participant of the Only Watch auction and this article has a deeper look into the 2023 edition model.

Last month, I had written about the Only Watch auction and showcased my Top 10 choices from the auction pieces; if you have missed that article, check it out here.

One of my top choices was the Girard-Perregaux (GP) Neo Constant Escapement Only Watch Edition and of course, the pink gold colour as well as the overall aesthetics of the timepiece swayed me, but the other reason was the innovative watchmaking behind it. For one to understand the value of the mechanics in the watch, it is important to understand constant-force escapement which is providing the escapement with a constant flow of power regardless of whether it is fully wound or nearly wound. For those who might be new to this concept need to understand that when a watch is fully wound, the force from the spring barrel is really high which can reduce accuracy as well as damage the movement. Similarly, when the spring wheel is almost out of energy, then this also reduces the accuracy/precision. The constant escapement ensures that this does not happen by providing a constant force system. This innovative constant force escapement was launched in 2013 and recognised by Grand Prix D’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG: https://www.gphg.org/horlogerie/en/watches/constant-escapement-lm).

This GP only watch model is based on a prototype made in 2008 as well as being part of the bridges collection. The bridge is not only a technical aspect, but for this collection, it is a part of the watch’s identity and highlighted through the open-worked dial as seen in this only watch model. This watch is 45mm in diameter and close to 15mm in thickness which is not bad at all considering the encased movement. The dial is a true work of art with its pink gold surface and contrasting black elevated indices referring as the hour markers which adds to the colour through its blue luminescence. Oh yes, it’s hard to miss the purple-coloured silicon escapement spring which forms the heart of this innovative constant escapement. On the 9 o’clock position, you will find the power reserve indicator which is great to keep track of the 7-day power reserve (If you needed reminding about winding the watch). The dial is accentuated with the AR-coated sapphire crystal as well as a sapphire crystal on the caseback through which you can see the beautiful GP09200-2196 hand-wound mechanical movement.

To close it off, the watch is chronometer-certified (COSC) and the pink-gold dial is matched with a black rubber strap (that has a fabric effect) along with a pink gold triple folding buckle. The timepiece is valued between CHF 140,000 – 220,000 (AED 585,600 – 920,250), but with its elegant, yet sporty looks and holy grail watchmaking innovation, let’s see what’s the final price tag for this one at the auction!
