What is the new Speake Marin Tourbillon Royal Blue?
Anglo-Swiss watch brand Speake Marin has unveiled the Tourbillon Royal Blue for Geneva Watch Days. It is essentially the brand’s open worked tourbillon “reimagined in an intense, luminous Royal Blue, revealing its mechanical architecture in a striking new light.”
What are its dial features?

Royal Blue PVD treated open worked dial. Royal Blue PVD treated circular-grained flange featuring 12 hour-markers. They are Pantone 420 C light grey and coated with Super-LumiNova (blue luminescence). The hands are 4N PVD-treated and lacquered in Pantone 420 C light grey. They are coated with Super-LumiNova (emitting blue luminescence).
“Deep and vibrant, this commanding shade of blue contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the gold, while accentuating the depth and relief of the movement.”
What are its case and movement features?

Case and Strap: The Piccadilly case is made from 5N red gold, measuring 42 mm (diameter) * 12.35 mm (thickness). Dial side features a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 3 ATM or (approximately) 30 metres. The watch comes with a Royal Blue ostrich leather strap with light-brown calfskin lining. It is fitted with a 5N red gold pin buckle.
Movement: Powered by calibre SMA05, a manufacture automatic movement that drives the central hours and minutes, 60-second flying tourbillon (at 1.30) and power reserve indicator (at 7.30). It measures 34 mm (diameter) * 7.15 mm (thickness, excluding hands), comprises 290 parts (including 63 for the tourbillon cage) and 33 jewels, beats at a luxurious frequency of 3 Hz or 21,600 vph and delivers a minimum power reserve of 72 hours via 1 barrel. The movement features a fully integrated micro-rotor made from tungsten. Screw balance-wheel and Swiss lever escapement.
What do we think?
I was fortunate to meet with key representatives of Speake Marin during watch week in Geneva in April. It was my second time experiencing their watches. The first time was in Singapore in 2015, when the brand’s namesake founder Peter Speake-Marin was still involved with the brand (and present at the event). French entrepreneur Christelle Rosnoblet (CEO & Owner) bought the brand in 2012. Peter Speake-Marin left the company in 2017.
The watches I handled in April were impressive, evoking the brand’s unique design language and high-quality feel. In an industry often flooded with similarly designed watches, the brand’s designs are novel and refreshing. The Tourbillon Royal Blue elicits a regal vibe with its namesake colour and 5N red gold case and is an enticing interpretation of this unique open architecture watch. At only 5 pieces, it also promises rarity.
