Six Legendary Lotus Essex Espirits To Be Displayed At Salon Privé 2026

Only 34 were ever built. Just 26 are believed to survive today. This September, six of these legendary Lotus Essex Esprits will reunite at Salon Privé, in what could be the largest gathering of the iconic model in more than 40 years.

The automotive world loves a good reunion, but this one borders on the miraculous. This September, Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace will host what is believed to be the largest gathering of Lotus Essex Esprit Turbos ever assembled. Six of the ultra-rare sports cars will come together for a one-day celebration of one of Lotus’ most iconic road cars. That’s almost a quarter of the world’s surviving examples, in one place!

For enthusiasts, it’s the sort of event that deserves a pilgrimage. After all, spotting one Essex Esprit is rare enough. Seeing six lined up together is something most Lotus fans never expected to witness.

Why Is The Lotus Essex Esprit So Special?

To understand why this gathering matters, you have to rewind to the early 1980s. Lotus was riding high in Formula 1, backed by Essex Overseas Petroleum Corporation. The partnership produced one of motorsport’s most memorable liveries: a striking combination of metallic blue, red and chrome that became synonymous with the Colin Chapman-era Lotus racing cars.

The road-going Essex Esprit Turbo was created to celebrate that partnership. Originally, Lotus planned to build 100 examples between 1980 and 1981. Reality, however, had other ideas. Production stopped at just 34 cars, making it one of the rarest factory special editions the company has ever produced.

Of those 34 cars:

  • 23 were right-hand drive
  • 11 were left-hand drive

Today, only 26 examples are believed to survive worldwide, elevating the Essex Esprit into the upper ranks of collectible sports cars. Its distinctive Essex racing colours, unique decals and period-correct styling mean it’s instantly recognisable, even to enthusiasts who aren’t Lotus experts.

The Fastest Production Lotus Of Its Time

The Essex Esprit wasn’t simply a cosmetic special edition. Under the dramatic wedge-shaped body was a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 207hp, making it the fastest production Lotus available at the time.

By today’s standards, 207hp may not sound outrageous. But in 1980, housed in Lotus’ lightweight chassis and paired with the Esprit’s Giugiaro-designed body, it delivered the kind of performance that established the model as one of the defining British sports cars of its era.

Of course, the Esprit would later become famous for another reason: starring in pop culture, including its unforgettable appearances in the James Bond franchise. The Essex edition, however, has always occupied a unique place in the Esprit family tree thanks to its rarity and unmistakable motorsport connection.

Six Cars & One Historic Reunion

The display will take place on Saturday, 5 September, during the Salon Privé Club Trophy presented by Lockton on the South Lawn of Blenheim Palace. Tracking down surviving cars has reportedly taken months of detective work, with owners contacted from across the community in an effort to reunite as many examples as possible.

While individual Essex Esprits occasionally appear at concours events or Lotus gatherings, seeing several together is exceptionally uncommon. In fact, enthusiasts believe the previous largest known gathering featured just three cars at a Lotus club event in the early 2000s. Doubling that number makes this display historically significant for collectors and fans alike.

An Even Rarer Lotus Will Also Be There

As if six Essex Esprits weren’t enough, Salon Privé has confirmed another extraordinary guest. The only Lotus Essex Elite ever built will also be displayed alongside the Essex Esprit Turbos. That means visitors will also have the chance to see one of the rarest Lotus road cars in existence.

It’s the kind of display that reminds enthusiasts why special editions from the analogue era continue to command such fascination. They weren’t designed by marketing departments chasing Instagram engagement but were born from genuine motorsport success and built in numbers so small that decades later, each surviving example feels like a museum piece.

Salon Privé 2026 Promises A Spectacular Line-Up

Now entering its 21st year, Salon Privé returns to Blenheim Palace from 2 to 6 September 2026, bringing together some of the world’s finest classic cars, hypercars and luxury brands. The event begins with the renowned Salon Privé Concours by Aviva Private Clients, where internationally respected judges will evaluate some of the world’s most significant privately owned automobiles across 13 carefully curated classes.

Visitors can also look forward to:

  • Ladies’ Day by Boodles
  • Club Trophy presented by Lockton
  • Supercar Sunday
  • Lifestyle Club Day
  • Luxury retail experiences
  • Fine dining and hospitality

For Lotus enthusiasts, though, there’s little doubt about the headline attraction. Seeing six Essex Esprit Turbos parked side by side is a sight that may not be repeated for decades, or ever again!
