Ram 1500 REV Makes World Debut In New York

The first battery-electric light-duty truck from the American brand aims to offer a range of over 800km.

Those planning a trip to the 2023 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) will see Ram Truck’s latest and first-ever battery-electric offering in the flesh – the Ram 1500 REV. The light-duty zero-emissions truck has made its world premiere at one of the biggest automotive events on the global calendar.

The Ram 1500 REV will be available with two battery options. It’ll pack a 168kWh pack by default, with a target range of up to 563km. Alternatively, buyers can opt for the larger 229kWh battery, which could offer a range of up to 804km. Courtesy of the 800-volt electrical architecture, both battery packs can take DC feeds of up to 350kW. And under ideal conditions, that charger can add 177km of range in 10 minutes.

The truck will also offer vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-grid bi-directional charging capabilities, all adding to the convenience quotient. There are two power panels to dispense the onboard power. One is in the front trunk (frunk) with a 3.6kW rating, and the other – a 7.2kW power outlet – is in the bed.

For propulsion, the Ram 1500 REV uses two electric motors. Combined, they output 654hp/841Nm, which should be sufficient for all uses. In addition, the front motor has an automatic wheel-end disconnect function that lets the front wheels spin freely in certain conditions. That, as per Ram, improves overall efficiency. Other notable figures include 24 inches of water fording, up to 6,350kg of towing capability and a maximum payload capacity of 1,225kg.

There are five trim levels for the Ram 1500 REV – Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Limited and Tungsten. The features shared among them include four-corner air suspension with adaptive damping, 22-inch aluminium wheels wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion rubber, Hands-free Active Driving Assist, ParkSense Automated Parking System and a powered tailgate. In addition, creature comforts, such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect 5, a 10.25-inch display for the front passenger, heated and ventilated front seats, a digital rear-view mirror, a head-up display and 23-speaker Klipsch sound system, are also available.

Ram Trucks has been accepting pre-orders for the 1500 REV for a while now. And post its launch, the brand will introduce a new derivative – the 1500 REV XR. That, as per Ram, will offer a “class-shattering range”.
