Portable EV Charging In Dubai: Dubai Holding & PlusX Announce Partnership

The charger now comes to the car, starting at Palm Jumeirah. Now you can order a battery charging service through an app.

Dubai Holding Community Management has partnered with PlusX Electric to introduce on-demand portable EV charging across its residential communities. The service uses self-contained charging pods that are delivered directly to parked electric vehicles.

These units operate without permanent electrical infrastructure, extensive cabling or civil works, making them easier to deploy within existing residential developments. The rollout has begun at Palm Jumeirah and will progressively expand to other communities managed by Dubai Holding Community Management.

For residents, the concept is straightforward: book through an app, leave the EV parked and let the charger do the rest.

How Does The Portable EV Charging Service Work?

Residents can book and schedule a charging session through the PlusX Electric mobile application. A portable charging pod is then delivered to the vehicle’s location and connected to replenish its battery.

Each pod features monitoring and protective systems designed to provide safe and consistent performance. Residents in participating communities will also receive priority access to the service.

Why Portable EV Charging Matters

Access to convenient home charging remains one of the biggest considerations for EV buyers, particularly those living in apartments. Installing a permanent charger can involve electrical load assessments, community approvals, dedicated parking arrangements, cable routing, metering systems and, in some cases, upgrades to the building’s electrical supply.

Portable pods avoid several of these complications. They can be introduced within established communities without drilling into car parks or running new cables through the property. They will not replace conventional chargers.

A permanent residential wallbox, typically rated between 7kW and 22kW, remains the most convenient option for regular overnight charging. Public DC chargers, meanwhile, provide much higher outputs for rapid charging.

PlusX Electric’s pods occupy the space between the two, offering greater flexibility where fixed installations are difficult or unavailable.

Rollout Begins At Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is the first community to receive the new service. Further locations will follow in phases, although a complete rollout schedule has not been confirmed. Dubai Holding Community Management oversees communities developed by Nakheel, Meraas and Dubai Properties. Its portfolio includes 54 master communities and 57 jointly owned properties, collectively serving more than 1.6 million residents.

That gives the programme considerable room to grow. Even a gradual rollout could bring on-demand charging to a substantial number of EV owners across Dubai. The companies have not yet confirmed the number of portable pods available during the first phase or which communities will receive the service next.

What Is PlusX Electric?

PlusX Electric describes itself as one of Dubai’s largest private charge point operators, with more than 5,600 customers.

Its operations cover:

  • Home and community charging
  • Commercial fleet charging depots
  • Permanent charger installations
  • Battery swapping for electric two-wheelers
  • EV roadside charging assistance

Its portable charging model reverses the conventional arrangement: the vehicle remains parked while the energy is brought to it. This could be particularly useful in basement car parks and high-density developments where installing or accessing conventional chargers is challenging.

Ultimately, the service’s usefulness will depend on charging speed, pod availability and pricing. Get those three elements right, and portable charging could become a valuable addition to Dubai’s expanding EV ecosystem.

After all, an EV may offer instant torque and a dashboard large enough for a small cinema, but owners still need somewhere convenient to charge it.
