Porsche Vision 357 Speedster is an open-top electrified homage

Porsche will debut it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with more than a dozen special cars

The 356 Speedster from Porsche is a revered antique from yesteryears, one of the most desirable collector cars that commands an easy six-figure price tag at auction sites. It’s a car that harks back to Porsche’s origin days as it was literally the first batch of cars to get the Porsche badge stamped on them. As 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the German sports car firm, it was apparent that the brand reinvented its former halo car with a modern reinterpretation – the all-electric Porsche 357 Speedster Concept.

The Porsche 357 Speedster will mark its public debut at the ongoing Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. Porsche claims the 357 Speedster has the chassis from the 718 GT4 Clubsport and the electric motors with battery tech from the Mission R. The exact power output available on this modern homage concept isn’t revealed, but the Mission R’s 1022hp with its dual-electric-motor output can be considered a close call.

The simple monolithic body style from the 50s gets retained but with the 2023ish infusion of modern aero-centric elements such as front and rear diffusers, protruding side skirts and aero-honed magnesium 20-inch wheels. The concept gets finished in a two-colour livery with the two grey tones Marble Grey and Grivelo Grey Metallic, paying tribute to Porsche’s motorsport heritage. The exterior light units sit behind a patterned array of points milled within the body.

The interior is reduced to the essential and explicitly tailored towards the driver. The entire dashboard features a carbon-weave finish. The CFRP seat shell is integrated into the monocoque chassis, and the seat pads get draped in Racetex. The instrument panel is essentially a transparent surface with graphics overlaid on it.

“The Porsche Vision 357 is a nod to the first Porsche model line, Ferry Porsche’s dream sports car. And since the 356 has burned itself into the collective brand memory as both a convertible and a coupé, the same logic applies to the concept car: there can only be two,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche.

Extensive can be used to describe Porsche’s line-up for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, as the brand will bring more than 15 new and classic models. A special Porsche parade will ascend the famous hill twice daily at the Festival of Speed, led by the 356 No. 1 Roadster and comprising some special 911s and a host of other race-spec cars. The Special Porsche Parade will also be followed by an exclusive exhibition of the 718 Spyder RS and the Mission X to the wider public for the first time at Goodwood.
