GTi – Peugeot’s iconic moniker first introduced forty years ago is back. The legendary 24h of Le Mans circuit is where French carmaker Peugeot announced the return of the GTi banner with the launch of the new Peugeot E-208 GTi. With this, the new Peugeot E-208 GTi becomes the first all-electric GTi model.
All-electric powertrain entails the new Peugeot E-208 GTi can perform the 0-100kph sprint in 5.7 seconds, making it one of the fastest accelerating models in the B segment. The E-208 GTi maxes out at 180kph, courtesy of an M4+ electric motor that develops 280hp and 345Nm torques. Peugeot has also incorporated a limited-slip differential within the electric GTi’s reducer (which can be considered synonymous with a gearbox in an ICE engine) to offer better cornering behavior and agility.
Peugeot claims the new hot hatch is the first all-electric car designed by Peugeot Sport while boasting motorsport learnings from Peugeot 9X8 hybrids known to compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Hence, it benefits from a lowered ride height (by 30mm) and a wider track (56 mm at the front and 27 mm at the rear) to offer a better stance. 18-inch wheels with Peugeot GTi branding come standard, featuring the iconic “hole” design as a nod to the original GTi while also serving the purpose of brake cooling in this modern reinterpretation. Bumpers on the front and rear receive a splitter and a diffuser respectively for enhanced aerodynamics.
These mechanical and aerodynamic enhancements have led the Peugeot E-208 GTi to boast the best power-to-weight ratio in its segment. The fitment of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, bigger 355mm front disc brakes as well as the rear anti-roll bar further enhance the E-208 GTi’s performance-oriented appeal.
On the inside, the front passengers will enjoy the body-hugging sporty seats while components like the steering wheel and sides of the center console get wrapped with high-quality Alcantara. Moreover, the sporty smaller steering wheel has been recalibrated to offer more direct responses while the graphics of the digital instrument cluster and the central screen glow red in the E-208 GTi as standard.
A 54 kWh powers the Peugeot E-208 GTi which Peugeot claims to offer 350kms of range from a single charge. The E-208 GTi also features Vehicle 2 Load energy sharing functionality, allowing the hot hatch to charge smaller appliances while the battery itself can be recharged in 4h40 from a WallBox boasting a 7.4 kW power output.
Alain Favey, CEO of PEUGEOT, said, “We are thrilled to introduce the new PEUGEOT E-208 GTi, a ground-breaking next chapter in an iconic GTi story. This model represents a fusion of our rich heritage with cutting-edge technology, offering unparalleled performance and driving sensations, because at PEUGEOT we are serious about driving pleasure. With this new GTi, we set new standards within the hot hatch market.”
