The 2025 Canadian Grand Prix Preview: What to Expect from the Action-Packed Montreal Race

The 2025 Canadian Grand Prix is a highlight on the Formula 1 calendar and it’s set to deliver a dramatic weekend of high-speed action. There’s plenty to keep both teams and fans on the edge of their seats. Here’s what you can expect.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a unique blend of a temporary street track and a traditional circuit, creating a hybrid layout that offers a real challenge for both drivers and teams. Some sections are used by locals during the year, which means grip can be quite low in those areas, adding to the difficulty. The track’s configuration includes a mixture of long straights and slow corners — a combination that typically calls for medium to low downforce — while heavy braking zones make strong brake performance a key factor in delivering a competitive lap.

Weather is another major consideration in Montreal, with its frequently changeable conditions. Even if it’s not raining, temperatures are often quite cool, which can affect tyre warm-up and grip. This year’s forecast currently shows warm weather, which could favour McLaren, whose car performs well in these conditions.

The combination of heavy braking and low downforce typically plays into the hands of teams that perform well under these conditions. Ferrari, for instance, has a strong track record here — their package is often well-suited to low-downforce circuits with strong braking phases — and we could see them in contention for a strong result.

Red Bull is more difficult to predict. The team’s performance frequently depends on whether their car finds its “sweet spot” for the weekend — and, of course, whether Max Verstappen can extract its full potential. If everything falls into place, we may see him battling at the sharp end; otherwise, it might be a tough weekend.

While cold conditions typically suit Red Bull, we shouldn’t write them off. If they dial in their set-up, they could yet be in the mix.

Overall, we’re expecting a challenging but fiercely competitive Canadian Grand Prix — a weekend where adaptability, tyre management, and pure driver skill will make all the difference. The big question is: which team will come out on top when the chequered flag drops?
