Annual Calendar Reference 5396R-016
First introduced in 2006, the Annual Calendar Reference 5396 is a modern Patek Philippe icon, combining the annual calendar complication in a “classically styled case, inspired by that of the original Calatrava Reference 96,” hence the “96” in its reference number. It celebrates the 30th anniversary of the annual calendar, a patented Patek Philippe invention, that has been part of the brand’s lineup since 1996. Similar to a perpetual calendar, except that it requires manual correction once a year at the end of February, as it does not account for its 28 days and leap year of 29 days, (the latter once every four years).

The new Reference 5396R-016 features a sand-beige sunburst dial with rose gold faceted dauphine-style hour and minute hands, a slender seconds hand and rose gold applied faceted obus-style hour-markers. The outer dial features an hour and minute scale, denoted with subtle rose gold circular markers, with the one for the hours slightly larger. The 24-hour subdial at 6 o’clock features a snailed finish. Its case is made from 18K rose gold and measures 38.5 mm (diameter) * 11.25 mm (thickness). Both dial side and caseback feature sapphire crystals. Water resistant up to 30 metres. The watch comes with a shiny dark chestnut brown coloured alligator leather strap with contrasting beige stitching, fitted with a rose gold prong-buckle.
It is powered by Calibre 26-330 S QA LU 24H, an automatic movement with a 21K gold central winding rotor that drives the hours, minutes, seconds, 24-hour indication, moon phase display, and annual calendar functions of: day of the week, month and date. It measures 33.3 mm (diameter) * 5.8 mm (thickness), comprises of 339 parts and 34 jewels, beats at a modern rate of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of 35 hours (minimum) – 45 hours (maximum). It features the brand’s patented Gyromax® balance and Spiromax® balance spring. The watch is hallmarked by the Patek Philippe Seal.

What do we think?
As an independent family-owned watch brand, Patek Philippe is under no pressure to launch a plethora of models during Watches and Wonders Geneva. They can unveil as many or as few as desired by them. They have chosen the latter this year, with only three models that are essentially new interpretations of existing references.
The Annual Calendar comes in two flavours, the dressy Calatrava design Reference 5396R-016 and the more casual Reference 4946G-001. The World Time is presented in a bold new look housed for the first time in a yellow gold case for this reference. All three models join the Annual Calendar and World Time lineup in the brand’s catalogue and keep their respective complications legacy alive.
