The biggest news is undoubtedly the arrival of the first fully electric X5. Called the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, it uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive architecture with an 800-volt electrical system and an entirely new battery design.

The battery introduces new cylindrical cells measuring 120mm tall, offering approximately 20% higher energy density than BMW’s previous-generation prismatic batteries. The iX5 also supports bidirectional charging, allowing it to power homes, external devices or even feed electricity back into the grid where infrastructure permits.

Plug-In Hybrid Models Become Even More Capable

BMW continues offering plug-in hybrid variants, but they’re considerably more powerful than before. The X5 50e xDrive pairs the updated turbocharged 3.0-litre B58 straight-six engine with a 194hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Petrol, Diesel & Hydrogen Power

Traditional combustion engines haven’t disappeared. The updated 3.0-litre turbocharged B58 inline-six now develops 394hp & 580Nm. It features a revised turbocharger and 48V mild-hybrid assistance for improved efficiency, smoother power delivery and stronger acceleration.

Diesel versions will continue to be offered in markets where demand remains strong. Then comes perhaps the most intriguing future variant. BMW has officially confirmed that the iX5 Hydrogen will become the company’s first production hydrogen-powered vehicle.

Its third-generation fuel-cell system combines:

Performance enthusiasts can relax. BMW has already confirmed that a new V8-powered X5 M Performance model is on the way. Official specifications haven’t been revealed yet. But the current X5 M Competition already produces 625hp, and we expect the next-gen to produce much higher figures. After all, few vehicles blend school-run practicality with autobahn brutality quite like an X5 M.

Production begins in August 2026 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, the same factory that has built every X5 since the original debuted in 1999. The plant will also achieve another milestone by becoming the first to manufacture the all-electric iX5, supported by a new sixth-generation battery production facility operating without fossil fuels during normal manufacturing.

Market rollout is scheduled as follows:

  • Late November 2026: Petrol and diesel models
  • Early 2027: Plug-in hybrid and all-electric iX5
  • Later date: BMW iX5 Hydrogen
