Mercedes-Benz launches the new GLC

Mercedes brings the fight back to the mid-size SUV lineup.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has been a sales success globally in its segment. It meets all the requirements for an urban commuter. It has a brand that is synonymous with cars. It is the perfect size for a city runabout and has enough tech not to go crazy. The only issue with the previous generation was it had become a bit long in the tooth, and the competition had just gotten fiercer.

Behold the brand new GLC.

Following up on the previous generation, the new GLC looks similar to the older one. The styling is not revolutionary; it is evolutionary. The side profile looks similar to the previous version. The telltale differences are the new headlights and grille with the new taillights.

The GLC is now bigger, and it has grown longer and wider. The additional real estate is used to increase the boot space and shoulder room, which was lacking in the previous generation. Rear legroom has always been an issue in the last generation, and it has not improved in this generation.

More significant changes are found inside the cabin. The GLC gets the new Mercedes-Benz MBUX interface. The MBUX uses twin digital displays, an 11.9-inch vertical central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. MBUX supports “Hey Mercedes” voice inputs. The GLC gets a complete digital interface with no physical buttons following the S-Class. You can even spec the GLC with the new augmented reality navigation from the S-Class.

Initially, the GLC will be launched as the GLC300. It will come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The car will produce 258 HP and will be connected to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Eventually, we will be seeing GLC53 AMG and GLC63 AMG performance versions, and both will be running hybrid four-cylinder engines.  Mercedes will launch a PHEV version as well.
