Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new birth certificate for passenger cars built between 1986 and 2010, giving owners access to factory-recorded information about their vehicle’s original configuration.
Available through the Mercedes-Benz Classic Store, the €130 (AED 549) certificate details everything from the car’s original paint and interior trim to its engine number, transmission number and factory-ordered optional equipment. It is printed on high-quality paper and supplied in a specially designed presentation folder.
The timing makes plenty of sense. Cars from the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s are rapidly graduating from used-car status into the modern-classic world. The certificate covers an especially memorable period for Mercedes-Benz, encompassing everything from the W124 E-Class and R129 SL to the W140 S-Class, first-generation SLK and even the original A-Class.
Which Mercedes-Benz Models Are Eligible?
The birth certificate is available for almost all Mercedes-Benz passenger-car model series produced between 1986 and 2010.
Eligible model families include multiple generations of the:
- A-Class
- C-Class
- E-Class
- S-Class
- SL
- SLK
- R-Class
That list covers cars as diverse as a humble W202 C-Class diesel, a six-cylinder R170 SLK roadster and a V12-powered W140 S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the service is currently unavailable for AMG models, vans and smart vehicles. Owners of cars such as the C 36 AMG, CLK 55 AMG and SLS AMG will therefore have to wait for the programme to be expanded. Mercedes might have something special in store for the special cars.

A Golden Period For Mercedes-Benz
The selected production window encompasses some of the most interesting chapters in Mercedes-Benz history.
In 1986, the W124 was still relatively new, the W126 S-Class represented the upper reaches of German luxury, and the R107 SL was entering the final years of its remarkably long production run. By 2010, Mercedes-Benz was selling considerably more technologically complex machines such as the W212 E-Class, W221 S-Class and C207 E-Class Coupe.
The period also produced several cult favourites. The Porsche-produced Mercedes-Benz 500 E, for example, combined the W124 saloon body with a 5.0-litre V8 producing 326hp. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the flagship of the series, and its mixture of understated styling and serious performance has helped make it one of the era’s most desirable models.
Then there was the R129 SL, available over its lifetime with engines ranging from six-cylinder units to the mighty 6.0-litre V12. The W140 S-Class brought double glazing, soft-close doors and the sort of engineering ambition that made tight underground car parks feel woefully underprepared.
At the other end of the spectrum, the original A-Class brought front-wheel drive and compact packaging to the Mercedes-Benz range, while the SLK popularised the electrically folding metal roof. It is an exceptionally broad era, which makes access to accurate factory records particularly useful.
What Information Does The Birth Certificate Include?
Mercedes-Benz compiles each certificate using the manufacturer’s archived records. Depending on the market and vehicle, the document can include:
- Vehicle identification number
- Make and vehicle type
- Body type
- Shipping date
- Engine number
- Transmission number
- Original paint finish
- Original interior specification
- Factory-ordered optional equipment
This could help an owner determine whether a car left the factory with its current colour combination, wheel specification, upholstery and major equipment.
On older Mercedes-Benz models, optional equipment is often identified through numerical factory codes. A certificate can place that information into a clearer, properly presented manufacturer document rather than leaving an owner to decipher an aging data card or rely on an online VIN decoder of uncertain accuracy.
Is It An Authenticity Certificate?
The new birth certificate documents how a particular Mercedes-Benz was configured when it left the factory. However, it should not be confused with a mechanical inspection, condition report, or complete certification of originality.
It records the original engine and transmission numbers, for example, but the announcement does not state that Mercedes-Benz physically inspects the car to confirm those components are still fitted. Equally, the certificate can reveal the original paint colour, but it cannot establish whether the bodywork has subsequently been repainted or repaired.
Its real value lies in providing a reliable factory reference point. Owners can compare the archived specification against the vehicle as it exists today, while buyers and restorers receive useful information when assessing modifications or planning a return to factory specification.
Mercedes-Benz describes the certificate as a complement to the service booklet, owner’s manuals, invoices and other records. A well-documented history still requires all those pieces; the new certificate simply adds the manufacturer’s own archival data to the file.

Owners can order the certificate online through the Mercedes-Benz Classic Store. The process requires:

Mercedes-Benz says delivery usually takes place within five working days after the necessary documents have been received.
Presented properly alongside service records, original manuals and period invoices, the certificate could make an appealing addition to any modern classic’s history file. It may also help settle a few arguments at owners’ club meetings.
