The PBV WAV leverages electric vehicles’ design advantages to address the challenges faced by wheelchair users, their families, caregivers, and drivers.
Kia showcased the PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) at the Financial Times Future Motoring Conference in London in partnership with UK-based vehicle leasing company Motability Operations Ltd. The PV5 WAV is a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges.
Factors such as increased life expectancy and an ageing population drive demand for single-use vehicles. Transportation companies are expanding their WAV services and making policy changes in specific markets. As the sector continues to grow, the introduction of autonomous electric vehicle options is critical.
In 2021, Kia expanded its global efforts by conducting a comprehensive mobility research and demonstration project in Los Angeles, USA, to provide car-hailing services for people with mobility needs.
The Kia PV5 WAV is designed to provide freedom of movement not only for wheelchair users but also for their families, caregivers, and drivers. The vehicle will enable users to enjoy a more comfortable and convenient travel experience while seamlessly transitioning to electric mobility.
The PV5 WAV features a side-entry system that allows wheelchair users to board from the kerb safely. It also includes a fold-down third-row seat, enabling caregivers to assist wheelchair passengers from the side.
The PV5 WAV with side-entry will be entirely manufactured at Kia’s Hwaseong Evo plant in Korea, using the company’s “Made in Factory” system. The entire manufacturing process is designed to be environmentally sustainable and to reduce further barriers to entry for those requiring an equipped vehicle.
The model will offer easy curbside access to enhance safety and convenience. It will also feature a quick-access ramp for wheelchairs weighing up to 300 kg, and a specially developed wheelchair harness system.
Along with hardware innovations, the PV5 WAV will integrate applications essential for people with disabilities, based on the AAOS open software platform.
Kia plans to expand its PBV WAV to additional global regions.
