Jeep Launches Grand Cherokee In India

Like all its stablemates, the SUV will be locally assembled.

The wait is finally over! Jeep India has revealed all there is to know about the new Grand Cherokee, including the price. At the moment, there’s just one fully-loaded variant, priced at INR 77.50 lakh (introductory offer). It dethrones the Wrangler to claim the flagship status for the American automaker in India. Like other Jeep models available in the country, the newcomer will also be locally assembled at the brand’s Ranjangaon plant. Fun fact: India is the other place outside North America where Jeep will produce the Grand Cherokee.

Powering the fifth-gen Grand Cherokee is the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that does duty in the Wrangler. Even the 8-speed automatic gearbox is shared between the two. However, where the Wrangler has 268hp/400Nm on offer, the Grand Cherokee is slightly more powerful at 272hp/400Nm. And to ensure that the SUV can utilise most of the oomph available, Jeep has equipped it with the Quadratrac 4×4 system.

In the features department, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has a lot to offer. One of the highlights is the Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS). That works with features like Blind Spot Detection, Active Lane Management System, Intersection Collision Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pedestrian Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning.

Obviously, the list continues to include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch interactive display for the front passenger (segment-first), an equally-large digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and heated leather seats, 360-degree surround view and 33 connected-car features.

The assembled-in-India Grand Cherokee (RHD) is likely to find export markets down the line. That should help bolster Jeep’s business further. In India, the SUV competes with the likes of the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Volvo XC90. One could even consider the Range Rover Velar and the Land Rover Discovery Sport in the same league. So, if you had to buy one of those, where are you heading?
