Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils a new compact version of its dress watch

• The Master Ultra Thin Moon Pink Gold is now available in a 36 mm pink gold case. • The compact case size honours the proportions of classical round watches from the 1950s. • An in-house automatic movement drives the hours, minutes, seconds, date, and moon phase display. • It joins the brand’s Master Ultra Thin collection.

What is the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon Pink Gold?

It is a compact-size version of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s (JLC) Master Ultra Thin Moon Pink Gold watch. Its new case size of 36 mm is a tribute to the proportions of classical round watches from the 1950s. It joins JLC’s Master Ultra Thin collection, which includes the same model in its original 39 mm case size as well as a stainless steel reference in 36 mm.

What are its dial and case features?

Image: I love the symmetry of the dial. A reduced case size means less negative space on the expansive dial, a typical feature on many dress watches. Notice the faceted dauphine-shaped hour and minute hands; one side is satin-brushed and the other side is polished. The blue seconds hand adds a touch of colour to the dial and (almost) matches the deep-blue moon phase disc, which is adorned with stars. The dates are printed in black. The case, bezel, and curved lugs are fully polished. There is something charming and old-world about the recessed pusher at 8 o’clock. The straps are interchangeable. JLC offers a range of straps on their website. In addition, there is an entire world of aftermarket straps that will contrast well with this watch. The classic and timeless design of this watch will defy short-term trends.

Dial: Silvered dial with a sunburst finish. Dauphine-shaped hour and minute hands and trapezoidal-shaped gilt hour-markers.

Case and Strap: Made from 18K pink gold, measuring 36 mm (diameter) * 9.34 mm (thickness). Dial side and caseback feature a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 5 bar or approximately 50 metres. The watch comes with a black alligator leather strap fitted with a pin buckle made from 18K pink gold.

What are the movement features?

Image: Dial side of Calibre 925. JLC is referred to as “The Watchmaker of Watchmakers,” and “in-house” for them means something. Movement finishing includes Côtes de Genève, bevelled bridges and blue screws. The skeletonised automatic winding rotor (not pictured) is made from 22K pink gold.

It is powered by Calibre 925, an in-house automatic movement that drives the central hours, minutes, seconds, pointer date and moon-phase display. It measures 4.9 mm (thickness), comprises 245 parts and 30 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph, and delivers a power reserve of 70 hours from 1 barrel.

What do we think?

A classical dress watch is an essential part of a man or woman’s wardrobe, irrespective of whether one is a hardcore watch collector or not. Finding the right one can often pose a challenge. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin Moon Pink Gold, a watch that has its soul in the 1950s yet is a thoroughly modern watch, is a compelling choice.

Being a JLC, it comes with a rich horological heritage. Founded in 1833, the brand is 193 years old. Its timeless design and compact 36 mm dimensions are both in vogue now. Recently, JLC’s sister brand A. Lange & Söhne unveiled two limited editions of the 1815 UP/DOWN in a 37.5 mm case. (The standard version is 39 mm.) Independent watch brands are doing the same; MB&F unveiled the Legacy Machine No°1 EVO in a 42 mm case (the original was 44 mm).

Add to all this the Master Ultra Thin Moon Pink Gold’s robust in-house movement, a relatively accessible price, and an 8-year international warranty, and you have a winner on your wrist.
