Hyundai’s Vision N 74 retro concept is a certified head-turner

Apart from the non-existent gull-wing doors, it could pass as a Delorean DMC-12 successor

DeLorean, the brand behind the time travel car from the Hollywood flick, Back to the Future, was recently resurrected and unveiled as the conceptual successor to the icon. That car may be carrying the iconic gull-wing doors, but in every other aspect, this Hyundai Vision N 74 looks the part of what should’ve been the modern EV avatar of the DMC-12. Take notice world, your next EV with jaw-dropping looks could be a Hyundai.

The Hyundai Vision N 74 is a concept car previewing the Future of performance EVs to come out of Hyundai’s stable. The idea behind Vision N 74 Concept’s inception was to primarily assess a high-performance hydrogen powertrain while being clothed in a head-turning attire. If the Ioniq 5 with its pixelated headlights caught your gaze, this Hyundai Vision N 74 would turn heads.

While many may see the DeLorean as a design inspiration behind the Vision N 74 with its flat and squared body surfaces, the engineers claim it to be an electric tribute to the 1970 Hyundai Pony concept car. For the unaware, a special one-off sporty coupé version, designed by Italdesign’s Giorgetto Giugiaro, was commissioned by Hyundai in 1974, which didn’t see the light of the day, allowing Hyundai to introduce a much-needed blast from the past.

The Hyundai Vision N 74 gets equipped with two electric motors with a 670hp output. Interestingly, Hyundai equips the N 74 with a 95kW hydrogen fuel cell that fuels a 62.4kWh battery pack to power the dual electric motors. The battery pack can be fast-charged, while the hydrogen tank can be topped up in five minutes to yield a range of about 600kms (or 370 miles). The two-motor setup makes this Hyundai sports car capable of active torque vectoring for heightened performance. This concept car also has a central cooling system overlooking separate coolant channels for the battery, fuel cell and motors to explore advanced cooling technologies.

The designers of the Vision N 74 claim this to be the brand’s latest Halo model, showcasing the firm’s future potential and its intent to explore beyond the regular sedans and SUVs. No confirmation has been made on the Vision N 74’s production plans, but enough interest might peg Hyundai to put it in limited-series production.
