DeLorean marks an iconic return with Alpha5 EV

Features gull-wing doors from the DMC-12

DeLorean, or the company behind Hollywood’s idea of a time travel machine, went defunct 40 years ago. However, an ex-Tesla official named Joost de Vries has taken upon himself to revive the American carmaker brand. We might be moving ‘Back to the Future’!

DeLorean’s rebirth will be spearheaded by the Alpha5 EV – a conceptual successor to the DMC-12 with two doors, sports car-like dimensions and four seats. Unveiled digitally, the Alph5 EV will make its public debut at the Pebble Beach in August, followed by the commencement of production by 2024. The new DeLorean boss further declared plans of selling the car in a limited run of 88 units initially – a reference to the speed needed to time travel in the Hollywood flick.

Upon speaking to automotive media house Autocar, DeLorean boss de Vries stated the Alpha5 would possess the performance to match the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car or even the Porsche Taycan all-electric sports saloon. Performance figures reportedly comprise a 0-96kph time of 3.4secs, top speed of 241kph and a claimed range of 482kms and above.

Giorgetto Giugiaro sketched the design of the original DMC, so it only seemed fitting that the Alpha5 was penned down by Italdesign, a design house founded by Giugiaro. While the other technical specifications have been kept under wraps, many design elements have been carried over from the spiritual predecessor. For instance, the new car features turbine-style alloys, louvres on the rear windshield, and prominent gull-wing doors.

While the original DeLorean company closed down after its sole release tanked in the market, the new DeLorean has plans to branch out to various sectors. The revived company has devised a product pipeline consisting of a V8 sports car, an all-electric sedan, and a hydrogen-powered premium sports SUV that’s envisioned to bring big sales numbers for the brand.
