Hyundai RN22e concept previews the brand’s upcoming performance EVs

The first N-spec performance EV will be a hatchback, slated for launch next year.

If you’ve managed to lift your dropped jaws back up after staring at Hyundai’s N Vision 74 Concept, there’s another Hyundai to take you by surprise. It is called the Hyundai RN22e, another concept-only racetrack-centric offering made to preview Hyundai’s upcoming line of performance EVs under the N division.

Many may argue the RN22e prototype resembles what the Ioniq 6 would’ve looked like if given the N treatment. Hyundai remains tight-lipped on the same and retains its announcement of the Ioniq 5 being the first EV to carry the N badge with a market launch slated for next year.

On paper, the RN22e is essentially an Ioniq 6 with significant aerodynamic additions. Hyundai equips it with deeper air dams, diffusers and a tweaked spoiler to help it slip through the air. Larger tires and wider wheel arches add the required aggression on a track-spec car. Reports suggest this might be Hyundai’s way to gauge the interest of potential customers on the polarising styling.

Hyundai is looking at ways to make the performance EV more dynamic and engaging like its petrol-powered derivatives. The South Korean carmaker plans to inject synthetic throwbacks, seen on piston-powered cars, to replicate the impression of gear shifts. While the basic process of weight reduction gets followed, the RN22e also boasts torque-vectoring capability that allows it to have an overpowering effect imposed on the outer wheel using a clutch pack.

Powertrain duties are managed by a two-electric motor setup that further brings all-wheel-drive capabilities into the mix. The power output at 577bhp is similar to the Kia EV6 GT, but the N division tweaks will allow the driver to choose the torque split between the front and the rear wheels. This makes the RN22e the first car to allow manual configuration that only saw computer-controlled automatic or fixed split operation in other cars. Brakes must manage significant load with track-spec EVs as they switch between regenerative energy operations and stopping the car. Hence, Hyundai has cooked up a 400mm hybrid-metal disc to help with both tasks.
