Gogoro and Zypp to introduce battery-swapping scooters in India

Both brands will setup up battery-swapping stations in the capital city of Delhi

Rechargeable EVs appear to be the future of Indian four-wheelers. But the same isn’t the sole option for Indian two-wheelers. Gogoro, a global technology company, announced its arrival in India by allying with Zypp Electric, India’s leading EV-as-a-Service platform. The partnership aims to electrify logistics fleets and last-mile mobility needs via battery-swapping technology.

A pilot batch for Zypp and Gogoro is slated to launch in December 2022. Gogoro Network GoStations, Gogoro Smart Batteries and Gogoro Smart scooters will be available in Delhi. Depending on the performance of this pilot batch, both firms will project a plan to scale their operation in India.

For the unaware, Gogoro is a leading EV battery-swapping technology ambassador, registering more than 350 million battery swaps to date. Horace Luke, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Gogoro, said, “Today, we are announcing a strategic partnership with Zypp Electric, India’s leading EV-as-a-Service platform, to launch a B2B pilot in Delhi that will enable last mile delivery fleets to begin to adopt sustainable energy and transform their businesses for the future using Gogoro battery swapping.”

Speaking on Gogoro’s announcement and commitment to India, Gogoro General Manager for India, Kaushik Burman, said “Today’s strategic initiative and partnership with Zypp is a first step in validating and demonstrating Gogoro’s proven leadership in battery swapping while also learning from local businesses and riders. Gogoro is a founding member of the Indian battery swapping association (IBSA), and we are collaborating with multiple industry partners and regulatory authorities to contribute to a better India. Gogoro has been working to secure all of the relevant certifications for its batteries and battery swapping stations.”

While the firm remains tightlipped on the models expected to arrive on Indian shores, one can expect the base models to get shipped here, courtesy of the commercial demand both brands aim to fulfil.
