Girard-Perregaux unveils the Laureato 38 MM Copper Diamond Bezel

A mid-size timepiece with a copper-coloured dial and a bezel adorned with diamonds.

Girard-Perregaux (GP), the La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland based prestigious watchmaker, has unveiled the Laureato 38 MM Copper Diamond Bezel. It is based on the Laureato 38 MM Copper, a successful 2022 release. The new Copper Diamond Bezel is adorned with a diamond bezel.

History

Girard-Perregaux was founded in 1791 by Jean-François Bautte and is one of the oldest Swiss watchmakers. Their timepiece families include the Laureato, Bridges, 1966, Vintage 1945, and Cat’s Eye. Their Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges is one of the most iconic designs in horology.

In Girard-Perregaux’s own words:

“Rooted in its heritage, Girard-Perregaux is driven by the instinct to always look ahead, embracing new technologies, utilising state-of-the-art-materials, and finding inventive ways to bring joy by reimagining iconic shapes. To this end, Girard-Perregaux has remained a human-sized Manufacture, and in 2022 became part of an independent collective of Haute Horlogerie Manufactures alongside sister Maison Ulysee Nardin.”

Design

The Copper Diamond Bezel is part of Girard-Perregaux’s Laureato family.

Launched in 1975, the Laureato has become an iconic design, and a popular family of timepieces for Girard-Perregaux. It serves as a versatile platform for both horological functions and case and dial styles. For the former, time-only pieces, chronographs, and grand-complications, to name a few. For the latter, steel, precious metals, ceramic, and skeleton, to name a few.

Its most eye-catching feature is its octagonal bezel.

“The octagonal bezel sits atop a circular plinth which in turn rests upon a tonneau-shaped case.”

“But despite having geometric, clean-cut lines, the Laureato’s case also has a gentle character, reminiscent of a rock shaped by nature and devoid of harshness. Throughout the composition there is an exquisite interplay between polished and satin finished surfaces. Both finishes are clearly defined and discrete from one another, thereby optimising the effect. Lastly, the exterior is completed with an integrated bracelet that ergonomically hugs the wearer’s wrist, bestowing a comfortable fit. It is this assemblage of contrasting forms that has led to the Laureato’s unique profile, making it instantly recognisable when viewed from afar.”

Dial, Case and Bracelet

The Copper Diamond Bezel has a copper-coloured dial with a ‘Clous de Paris’ pattern.

The 10 rhodium-plated hour-markers around the dial and the hours and minutes hands are all ‘baton’ type, each coated with luminescent material, which give out white emission. The centre seconds hand is gold-plated. The date window at 3 o’clock is the same colour hue as the dial. The “GP” logo at 12 o’clock is gold-plated. A minute track, graduated in increments of 5 minutes – with each 5th minute denoted by a square – encircle the outer dial.

“Girard-Perregaux” and its horizontal logo are present between the centre of the dial and “GP” logo at 12 o’clock. “Laureato Automatic” is present just above the 6 o’clock baton hour-marker.

The Copper Diamond Bezel’s case is crafted in steel. 56 diamonds (approximately 0.90 carats) encircle its octagonal bezel. 8 large diamonds are set in each of the 8 corners, with smaller diamonds set in between.

It has a case diameter of 38 mm and a case thickness of 10.02 mm. The dial side has an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and the caseback side, a sapphire crystal. Its crown is on the right side of the dial at 3 o’clock and has the “GP” logo on it. The case is water resistant up to 100 metres or 10 ATM.

Its integrated bracelet is crafted in steel and is polished, and satin finished. It features a triple folding buckle crafted in steel.

Calibre

The Copper Diamond Bezel is powered by Girard-Perregaux’s in-house self-winding calibre GPO3300-2034, featuring a rotor crafted in18K pink gold. Its functions are hours, minutes, centre seconds and date.

The calibre has a diameter of 25.95 mm and a thickness of 3.36 mm. It consists of 218 components, has 27 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 Vib/h or 4 Hz, and has a power reserve of 46 hours. It is visible via a sapphire caseback.

Concluding Thoughts

The Copper Diamond Bezel is a welcome addition to both Girard-Perregaux’s Laureato family and the world of integrated bracelet timepieces.

The contrast of its lovely copper-coloured dial with steel case and bracelet ensures its versatility, equally at ease in a casual, semi-formal and formal setting. The diamond bezel caters to those collectors who appreciate a bit of “bling” without being too loud. Its mid-size proportions ensure that it caters to both female and male collectors. Girard-Perregaux has a winner with this timepiece.
