Czapek Genève introduces a new watch with an enticing smoked sapphire dial

• The Promenade Transparencies Aqua Blue features a blue fumé metallised translucent sapphire crystal dial. • It is powered by in-house skeletonised movement with a micro-rotor made from 100% recycled platinum. • It is housed in a 38 mm stainless steel case. • It is limited to 38 pieces.

What is the new Czapek Genève Promenade Transparencies Aqua Blue?

It is a sophisticated three-hand watch that features a blue fumé metallised translucent sapphire crystal dial that is powered by an haute horology automatic movement. The Promenade Transparencies Aqua Blue arrives two years after the Promenade Transparencies Viridian Green.

What are its dial features?

Image: An inviting view. Notice the subtle white markers of the hour and minute scale. The markers for the hours are a tad thicker. The small seconds subdial is a lovely design detail and contrasts well with the rest of the semi-transparent dial showcasing the workings of the movement.

Blue fumé metallised translucent sapphire crystal dial. Each baton-shaped hour-marker is a Super-LumiNova block in 3D tinted light blue. It is hand-applied on the sapphire crystal dial. It is “luminescent in the same light blue tone after dark.” The arrow tips of the skeletonised hour and minute hands are coated with the same colour Super-LumiNova.

“The dial is not lacquered, painted, or tinted through the sapphire’s mass. Its blue fumé gradient is produced through metallisation, a vapour-deposition process in which a metallic coating is applied to the underside of the sapphire disc in a pattern of microscopic dots roughly eight microns in diameter, each several times thinner than a human hair. The density of these dots increases toward the periphery of the dial and thins toward the small seconds register at 4:30, producing the graduated blue tone without altering the optical clarity or the mechanical transparency the collection is named after. The result is a sapphire disc that remains fully see-through at its centre and progressively opaque at its edge, a property achieved at the level of coating density rather than pigment.”

What are its case and strap features?

Left: Notice the curved lugs and hollow flanks of the stainless steel case. Right: The micro-rotor (right on image) is made from 100% recycled platinum and is engraved on both sides. Notice the variable-inertia or free-sprung balance wheel (bottom of image) with its 4 gold inertia-blocks. “Visible from both sides of the case, the automatic Calibre SXH7 is a fully skeletonised evolution of Czapek’s Calibre SXH5, redesigned specifically to be as compelling dial side as it is through the caseback. Its seven open worked bridges, angled from the outer edge of the movement to grip the gear train, are a direct reference to the multiple-bridge architecture of François Czapek’s 19th-century pocket watches. To achieve a fully legible front, Czapek’s engineers reversed the entire escapement, relocated the small seconds to a sub-dial at 4:30 so that it could be driven directly off the fourth wheel, and redesigned the crown and keyless works to sit correctly on the dial side.”

The case is made from stainless steel, measuring 38 mm (diameter) * 10.8 mm (thickness). Its lug-to-lug distance is 42 mm. Dial side features a sapphire crystal glass box with anti-reflective treatment, whereas the caseback features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on the inside. Water resistant up to 5 ATM or approximately 50 metres.

The watch comes with a dark blue Nubuck leather strap. A Milanese mesh bracelet made from stainless steel is an option.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Yes. It is powered by Calibre SXH7, an in-house automatic skeletonised movement that drives the central hours and minutes and small seconds at 4.30. It measures 30 mm (diameter) * 4.2 mm (thickness), comprises 152 parts and 25 jewels and beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours via one barrel.

Movement finishing incudes open worked ratchets, sandblasted rhodium-plated bridges, hand-chamfered interior angles and straight grained flanks. These are applied symmetrically on both the dial and caseback side.

What do we think?

Image: A study in transparency and versatility. The latter due to its 38 mm stainless steel case, making it perfect as a dress watch and a daily beater. At the time of writing this article, all 38 pieces are spoken for.

With its semi-transparent sapphire crystal dial, skeletonised haute horology movement and perfect proportions, the Promenade Transparencies Aqua Blue is an enticing interpretation of a three-hand watch. Its price of CHF 28,800 is steep but comparably more affordable than the exorbitant prices charged by some other independent watch brands. For collectors seeking to diversify their collection with a unique watch from an independent maker, the Promenade Transparencies Aqua Blue is a serious contender.
