Tutima Glashütte unveils the tempting new Flieger T5

• A lightweight three-hand watch with date; it builds on the German brand’s aviation heritage and titanium expertise. • It is presented in two dial options: glossy black and glossy blue. • Its 38.5 mm case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium. • It is available with either a titanium bracelet or a leather strap.

What is the new Tutima Glashütte Flieger T5?

It is Tutima Glashütte’s new pilot’s watch crafted from Grade 5 titanium. The Flieger T5 combines the German brand’s “decades of aviation know-how with longstanding expertise in the use of the high-tech material titanium.”

What are its dial features?

Image: Glossy black lacquered dial on its titanium bracelet. Typical pilot’s watch dial evoking an “instrument-like design” especially with the minute track calibrated in 5-minute increments. The red seconds hand provides a nice contrast with the black dial and white markings. I really like the discreet date window at 6 o’clock. Kudos to the brand for making the date wheel match the colour  of the dial. The triangle with two dots at 12 o’clock, a typical pilot’s watch feature, is for “additional orientation.” Notice the brand’s emblem at 12 o’clock, just below the triangle.

The Flieger T5 is available with either a glossy black or glossy blue lacquered dial. The lance-shaped hour and minute hands, Arabic numerals and baton-shaped hour-markers are coated with Super-LumiNova.

What is its case, bracelet, and strap features?

The three-row titanium bracelet features a mix of satin (outer rows) and polished (centre row) finishes. Notice the brand’s emblem embossed on the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock. The dial-matching blue date wheel at 6 o’clock deserves mention.

The Flieger T5’s case is made from Grade 5 titanium, measuring 38.5 mm (diameter) * 12.5 mm (thickness). Dial side features a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The Grade 5 titanium screw-in caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 10 ATM or approximately 100 metres. The watch is available with either a titanium bracelet fitted with a titanium folding clasp and a light brown Horween leather strap. Notice the contrasting box stitching and dial-matching blue lining of the strap on the header image.

“Grade 5 titanium is a special alloy consisting of 90 percent titanium, with the addition of six percent aluminium and four percent vanadium providing enhanced durable strength and dimensional stability. The alloy combines the many advantages of pure titanium – including high corrosion resistance, antimagnetic properties, and excellent biocompatibility at low density – with exceptional resistance to external forces and extreme temperatures. As a pioneer, Tutima had already chosen titanium for its groundbreaking Bundeswehr and NATO chronograph and has since accumulated decades of experience working with this highly functional material. This expertise in lightweight engineering also shapes the new Flieger T5.”

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Image: The Cal. Tutima 330 is based on the ETA 2836-2, a tried and tested dependable movement. Notice the polished screws. The brand’s emblem is crafted from 18K gold and affixed on the rhodium-plated automatic winding rotor. The movement is regulated by hand at Tutima.

Yes. It is powered by the Cal. Tutima 330, an automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, sweep seconds and date. It comprises 25 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 41 hours.

What do we think?

Image: Pilot’s watches are not my favourite genre of watchmaking. Yet the Flieger T5 glossy black lacquered dial with titanium bracelet reference could well be my daily beater. Fun fact: The Tutima Hommage Minute Repeater of 2011 was the first minute repeater wristwatch entirely conceived and crafted in Germany. I had the opportunity to handle it, along with a selection of the brand’s other watches, during India Watch Weekend held in Mumbai in January this year.

Pilot’s Watches are often an acquired taste as they tend to be big, bold, and intimidating objects. Based on the images and supporting information, I really like the Flieger T5. It boasts perfect proportions, lightweight due to its Grade 5 titanium construction, a perfectly balanced dial, a tried and tested movement, and an affordable price tag. All this from a brand with a genuine heritage in pilot’s watches. Let this sink in. I can see the Flieger T5 being a bestseller for the brand.
