Genesis unveils three luxury EV models for the Middle East

The Genesis GV60 will allow users to unlock doors using facial recognition

As teased last month, Genesis Middle East and Africa has now officially unveiled its line-up of EVs for the Middle East region. Genesis hosted the launch in Al Ula, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the brand showcased the three luxury models set to debut the brand’s electrification drive for the region – the Electrified G80, the Electrified GV70, and the GV60.

Omar Al-Zubaidi, Head of Genesis Middle East & Africa, said, “We are thrilled to begin the next chapter of our thriving journey in the Middle East. The Genesis EV models bring forth elevated technology to deliver an elevated lifestyle.”

Electrified G80

The Electrified G80 is a luxury electric sedan by Genesis built on the heritage of its petrol-powered predecessor G80. The Electrified G80 subtly distinguishes itself by featuring the signature G-Matrix pattern on its crest grille and front bumper that further houses a hidden charging panel. The interiors of the Electrified G80 get equipped with Nappa leather with eco-friendly Forged Wooden trim elements spread across the cabin. This electric luxury sedan boasts a 364hp (or 272kW) power output while carrying an 87.2kWh battery pack that features a 400V/800V multi-rapid charging system whilst being capable of V2L feature that allows customers to use the sedan’s electric power of up to 3.6kW to power other machines.

Electrified GV70

Continuing on the design lines of the luxury sedan, the Electrified GV70 is also built on its GV70 predecessor’s heritage, allowing it to inherit the latter’s spacious interior while adding a host of EV-exclusive new technologies. The design formula of having a tweaked Crest grille featuring an inverted G-Matrix Pattern has been retained from the Electrified G80. The interiors, though, carry the template from its petrol-powered predecessor but introduces the ‘Beauty of White Space’ design concept, which drapes almost the entire upholstery in white. The Electrified GV70 becomes the first Genesis model to feature the SUV-specific e-Terrain Mode, which is claimed to ensure a stable driving experience in varied environments. The Electrified GV70 also boasts sporty attributes with a boost mode that allows the SUV to make the 0-100kph sprint in 4.2secs with a power output of 482hp (or 360kW). The battery pack is a 77.4kWh unit.

Genesis GV60

The GV60 signals Genesis’ move to electrification as it’s the brand’s first car to get built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) EV-dedicated architecture by the Hyundai Motor Group. Other cars built on the platform include the award-winning duo of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and the Ioniq 6.

Genesis describes the design of the GV60 as a coupe crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It features special exterior elements such as a clamshell bonnet and a new wing emblem decorated with a Guilloché pattern, often seen in luxury watches. The interior builds on the ‘Beauty of White Space’ ethos with all-white upholstery. A Crystal Sphereon the centre console is one of the most innovative elements found in the interior that is claimed to create an emotional connection between the driver and the vehicle.

Additional innovative features include Face Connect door locking/unlocking, which allows users to open doors by registering their faces on a camera placed on the B-pillar. A Fingerprint Authentication System on the GV60 will enable drivers to start and drive the car without a key.

The GV60 aims to please enthusiasts with special Drift and Boost modes. A Virtual Gear Shift function further mimics the driving feel of an ICE vehicle by adjusting the motor’s torque and pumping virtual engine sound inside the cabin. The instrument cluster further exhibits a virtual shift stage and RPM data for a more enthusiast-friendly driving experience.

The GV60 will be available in two iterations – Standard and Performance models. The Standard range would further boast RWD and AWD trims with up to 313hp power output on offer, whereas the Performance model will boast a 482hp power unit making it the fastest EV from the brand. Both models will be equipped with a 77.4kWh battery pack, which will allow 400/800V multi rapid charging system, and V2L (Vehicle to Load) capabilities.
