Frenchies in great shape to start Wimbledon second round

Humbert falls Ruud, Garcia and Parry qualified, under the London sun, French players globally shone today. On the other hand, despite a passionate crowd, the Centre Court's Brits, Raducanu and Murray, lost.

Humbert takes down the #3 seed !

The Frenchman, formerly ranked number 25 in the world and now ranked 112th, won a prestigious match against the Norwegian Casper Ruud. Four sets, 2 hours and 39 minutes were all it took for Humbert to defeat the recent French Open finalist, thus giving David Goffin an appointment for the third round. Despite his 48 unforced errors, the 2021 Halle winner was able to rely on a good serve and backhand, as he said at the end of the match, but he also showed off his forehand shots for a total of 53 winners, and his climbs to the net with 39 points won. After winning the first set, Casper Ruud was unable to hold off the Frenchman, who was able to raise his game and win the next three sets (3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4). A major victory, a rise in power, a surface that he likes, can Ugo Humbert take on the role of outsider? The answer will be given in the next few days.

On her momentum, Caroline Garcia beats Raducanu

After winning the WTA 250 in Bad Homburg last week, Caroline Garcia continues her great season on grass. For her Wimbledon debut, the Frenchwoman eliminated two British women : first Lily Miyazaki, whom she beat in three sets, and now world number 11 Emma Raducanu on Centre Court, in front of thousands of spectators supporting the young Londoner, a match that the Frenchwoman negotiated perfectly (6-3, 6-3). More dominant and aggressive, as evidenced by her 25 winners (against 12) and her 16 points won at the net, the 28-year-old from Lyon logically qualified and will face the 33-year-old Chinese Shuai Zhang in the next round. Raducanu, on the other hand, is eliminated at the same stage as at the Australian Open and this year’s French Open.

Winner Diane Parry will go on to challenge Ons Jabeur, is the feat possible for the young Frenchwoman ?

With her clear victory over the Japanese Mai Hontama in the second round (6-3, 6-2), the Frenchwoman Diane Parry has qualified for the next round. She will face the number 3 seed of the tournament, Ons Jabeur, who got rid of the Polish Katarzyna Kawa with a score of 6-4, 6-0 in 59 minutes of play. The Tunisian will be the favourite for this next confrontation, but Parry will certainly have some cards to play in order to create a surprise. Reminder : Parry caused a sensation at the French Open by knocking out defending champion Barbora Krejcikova. Facing the best doesn’t seem to scare her. Another point not to be overlooked is that the 19-year-old confessed that she takes great pleasure in playing on grass and that she loves this surface.

The Frenchies were in great shape for this third day but some of them still fell short. Adrian Mannarino was defeated in three sets by the American Tommy Paul (6-2, 6-4, 6-1) in just two hours of play. Quentin Halys was also eliminated in four sets by the Georgian Nicoloz Basilashvili (6-7, 6-0, 5-7, 6-7).

Murray loses to Isner, Djokovic and Alcaraz qualify

Despite the cheers of the crowd at every point he scored, the former world number one and now 52nd on the ATP rankings finally succumbed to the American giant John Isner in four sets (4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 4-6), 3 hours and 18 minutes. Although he put up a fierce fight and delivered several fantastic points to overtake the No.20 seed, Andy Murray couldn’t resist, particularly in the face of Isner’s quality of service (36 aces with 72% of first ball). Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz both beat their opponents in three sets: 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 for Novak against Kokkinakis, and 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 for the Spanish against Tallon Griekspoor. Tiafoe, Sinner, Otte and grass rising star Van Rijthoven also advance to the third round.
