Finally, AutoArt’s Porsche Carrera GT makes its way into my collection

Years of patience finally pay off!

I’ve been after this one for a long time! Years ago, I said to myself I needed to add a high end Carrera GT to my collection. I’ve had the Maisto car since I was a kid, but that one can’t compare to this. As time passed, used AutoArt model prices increased, and I just couldn’t bring myself to pay upwards of $400 for one.

My patience payed off, when my ebay alert finally went off a few weeks ago. This one had no box and was also missing its roof panel, unfortunately. I knew I could make due with no box, and the roof panel wouldn’t have been too bad if the mounting pegs didn’t break off in the headrest. Beggars can’t be choosers, so I made a bid and wound up on top.

Honestly, the Maisto version of the isn’t all that bad. The major difference is that it is based off the Carrera GT concept car. Maisto did an amazing job capturing the essence of that car, except for one unforgivable detail. The ride height is so far off, you’d swear it was a Carrera GT Dakar concept car. It didn’t bother me too much, until I set it on my shelf next to AutoArt’s 996 GT2.

This is a classic AutoArt model, from the tail end of their diecast era before they changed over to ABS Composite body panels. I’m not necessarily blown away by the details on this model, but it does the Carrera GT justice. I do love that the picnic table rear wing gets activated by a switch underneath. The engine hatch does not stay propped open for display, however. Color coded center lock hubs take the cake though!

Carrera GT’s are appreciating like crazy, selling in online auctions for over $1 million. One of the last, truly terrifying, analog super cars that we will never see the likes of again. Model cars though, are thankfully still within the grasp of normal people like us. Needless to say, I’m so happy I’ve crossed this one off my list. The box-less discount was too good to pass up, and who knows, maybe I’ll come across a spare roof panel some day!
