Enzo Ferrari’s best built racing car is going up for sale

RM Sotheby’s estimates it to fetch around $30million

2022 is shaping to be a busy year for car collectors, especially Ferrari aficionados. Last week witnessed renowned auction house RM Sotheby’s list out a one-off Ferrari Enzo finished in an exclusive colour for auction. And now, another exclusive Ferrari surfaces on their portal with the auction house claiming it to be the “best Ferrari ever built”.

RM Sotheby’s upcoming Monterey auctions will see a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti go up for sale. The car boasts a history of significant race success by famed drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio and Carroll Shelby. This 410 Sport Spider with chassis number 0598 CM is one of just two factory-campaigned 410 Sports equipped with a 24-spark plug 4.9-litre V12 engine and one of the few Ferraris to get designed and built by famed Ferrari designer Sergio Scaglietti.

This 410 Sport Spider is a highly original machine with the matching engine, chassis, and body numbers while still carrying the original fuel tank with inscriptions from Carroll Shelby. Those inscriptions read, “Mr Ferrari told me that this was the best Ferrari he ever built”. The American racing driver won more races as a driver in 0598 CM than any other car in his racing career. A Los Angeles Times reporter quoted Shelby claiming, “Nothing can touch this Ferrari if it runs”. Decades later, the race car driver made an additional comment on the car, stating, “It was the best Ferrari I ever drove.”

The purpose-built racing car has managed to have its racing-period livery retained and maintained though a team of Ferrari experts recently rebuilt the engine. Along with the car’s illustrious racing heritage boasted by the car, the highest bidder for this Ferrari 410 Sport Spider will also receive the first (1956) and last (1958) trophies won by Shelby driving 0598 CM, along with the original 1957 Nassau racing license plate.

Upon assessing the race wins and the list of drivers piloting this racing car, the value of this Ferrari 410 Sport Spider could be termed priceless. Though, RM Sotheby’s has managed to quantify the legacy and estimates the car to fetch roughly between $25 – 30 million.
