Bvlgari partners with Vianney Halter for a new super cool dual time

• The Octo Finissimo Dual Time X Vianney Halter is a joint design by Bvlgari’s Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani of Bvlgari and renowned independent watchmaker Vianney Halter. • A Geneva Watch Days launch, it is presented in two references: titanium, limited to 30 pieces and rose gold, limited to 15 pieces. • It is powered by a Bvlgari ultra-thin manufacture automatic movement featuring a platinum micro-rotor.

What is the new Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Dual Time X Vianney Halter?

A dual time watch, it is a joint design by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Product Creation Executive Director at Bvlgari and Vianney Halter, a renowned independent watchmaker. It is the first time Bvlgari has collaborated with an independent watchmaker on its iconic Octo Finissimo design.

“Collaborations are always interesting from a creative and personal perspective. You must decide what you are willing to give and what you are willing to receive, and in this regard, the personal relationship that develops is one of the key elements. With Vianney Halter, we found common ground immediately. We discussed from the outset what would be interesting to create together from both a technical and creative perspective, and the result merges two universes while keeping both instantly recognisable. The rigorous geometry of the Octo Finissimo case enhances the construction of independent dials, characteristic of Vianney Halter; the ultra-thin movement integrates new functions while preserving the distinctive qualities that have earned its reputation among watch enthusiasts.”Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani.

What are the dial features?

Image: Rose gold reference. Vianney Halter details all around. On the dial, notice the Vianney Halter shaped blue hands. The small seconds hand features a red arrow. (Not sure why the small seconds function is indicated on the GMT dial and not on the hour and minute dial.) “BVF 200” on the hours and minutes dial refers to the movement. I love the design of the date indicator. The numeral under the blue crescent-shaped indicator is the present date.

Both versions: The opaline and rhodium-plated hours and minutes dial (above right) and GMT function dial (below left) feature sandblasted and satin-brushed finishes. The day and night indicator (below right) and date indicator (above left) are also opaline and rhodium-plated.

“I enjoy partnerships like this one — they force my mind to adapt to another party’s imperatives. It is an exercise I rarely get to experience when creating for myself, as I design the movement and the case simultaneously. The Octo Finissimo, with its specific aesthetic and technical mastery, made the challenge even more compelling. Adapting to Bvlgari’s essence while integrating my own style and mechanical ideas is a stimulating exercise, especially when the dialogue is fluid and engaging. This experience is the perfect definition of a collaboration!”Vianney Halter.

What is the case, bracelet and strap features?

Image: Titanium reference. Notice the satin-finished porthole bezels. The rivets on the dial and shape of the crown are Vianney Halter design features. Notice the sculpted design and lines of the case. The collaboration between Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani and Vianney Halter “takes the Octo Finissimo into uncharted territory — a retrofuture somewhere between the Victorian era and science fiction, inspired by Jules Verne and precision engineering.”

Titanium reference

Sandblasted titanium case, measuring 40.5 mm (diameter) * 9.70 mm (thin). (It is 7.7 mm thin from the back-case to the largest bezel.) Crown is made from polished titanium and features a black ceramic insert. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 3 ATM or approximately 30 metres. The watch is fitted with a sandblasted titanium bracelet featuring an integrated folding buckle.

Rose gold reference

Sandblasted rose gold base and a vertically brushed upper part case, measuring 40.5 mm (diameter) * 9.70 mm (thin). (It is 7.7 mm thin from the back-case to the largest bezel.) Crown is made from polished rose gold and features a black ceramic insert. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 3 ATM or approximately 30 metres. The watch comes with a brown alligator leather strap fitted with a rose gold ardillon buckle.

How thick is the movement?

Image: The movement finishing includes “vertical Côtes de Genève, brushing and perlage.” The micro-rotor is made from platinum in both versions. On the rose gold version it is coloured in rose gold. Notice it is adorned with both “Bvlgari” and “Vianney Halter.” Notice the shape of the four screws. I am intrigued by the QR code (top left of image). I suppose the bottom pusher (left side of the case when viewed from the dial side) is to adjust the GMT function, and the top pusher is to adjust the date.

Only 5.29 mm! Both references are powered by BVF 200, a manufacture automatic movement that drives the hours and minutes, small seconds, GMT function, date and day / night indicator. It comprises 31 jewels, beats at a luxurious frequency of 3 Hz or 21,600 vph and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours.

What do we think?

My jaw dropped when I first saw the images of the Octo Finissimo Dual Time X Vianney Halter two days ago! To literally handover an iconic design to a renowned independent watchmaker and have him interpret it in his design language is unheard off among large watch brands. (Bvlgari did the same with MB&F last year with the Bvlgari X MB&F Serpenti. The Serpenti is another Bvlgari icon, and much older.) I could never imagine other mainstream brands doing the same. It displays immense confidence and creativity within Bvlgari.

Left: Vianney Halter’s Antiqua, an avant-garde perpetual calendar he introduced in 1998. It is considered one of the most iconic watches of all time. (Image credit: Vianney Halter website.) Right: 28 years later, he gives the Octo Finissimo the same steampunk treatment. Notice the resemblance between the two. The Octo Finissimo Dual Time X Vianney Halter is a merging of two design identities that works brilliantly.

The result is insanely cool (and I suppose insanely expensive too). It is every bit recognisable as an Octo Finissimo yet gets Vianney Halter’s steampunk treatment for which he is renowned. I predict the Octo Finissimo Dual Time X Vianney Halter is going to go down as one of the coolest contemporary watches and a likely GPHG candidate.
