Al Futtaim Group announces partnership with BYD at Future Mobility Day

The Al Futtaim group aims to have 3000 EV chargers installed by 2030

Earlier this year, the UAE President announced 2023 as the ‘year of sustainability’ for the country, entailing a stronger focus towards UAE’s fast-expanding e-mobility sector. And to capitalise on the same, Al-Futtaim, one of UAE’s leading diversified business groups, made a host of announcements at its recent Future Mobility Day event held on 15th March at Ain Dubai Plaza, Bluewaters to highlight its future mobility vision, including the launch of their all-new Electric Mobility Company.

Titled the Al Futtaim Electric Mobility Company, this new firm will operate as an individual entity while featuring the UAE’s first-ever e-mobility-focused dealership. The new firm would be led by the newly appointed Managing Director, Hasan Nergiz. With the UAE’s EV market expected to grow at a CAGR of 30% until 2028, the new firm would aid in maximising the UAE’s high levels of EV acceptability, with 30 per cent of UAE residents already strongly considering making the EV switch to contribute to the green transition.

Another major announcement by the automotive group was the new Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company welcoming its first NEV (New Energy Vehicle) partner – BYD. BYD, or Build Your Dreams, is a Chinese-originated carmaker that currently boasts the world’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer title, having sold 1.86 million NEVs worldwide in 2022 alone. This partnership enables the Al Futtaim group to facilitate the UAE in becoming the first country in the Middle East to have BYD vehicles touring its streets.

Commemorating the partnership, two BYD vehicles, namely the Atto 3 crossover and Han sports sedan, were unveiled at the Future Mobility Day event. More details on the models are expected in a few months, with the carmaker planning to launch four models (EVs and plug-in hybrids) by the end of this year.

The final announcement at the Future Mobility Day event had the Al Futtaim group re-emphasising the importance of having a full end-to-end solution for customers. This was followed by the declaration of a partnership with global technology pioneer Siemens, allowing the Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company to install a robust charging infrastructure comprising Charge2Moov charging stations for its EV customers. The product is already in place for its existing EV customers, with plans to extend into public charging solutions as well. The new EV company further promised to have 3000 chargers installed in the UAE by 2030. The charging stations would be offered with a 5-year warranty, suitable for all-electric vehicle models and brands.

Speaking at the launch, Hasan Nergiz, Managing Director, of Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company, said, “Beyond selling EV cars, the new company represents a remarkable leap in the automotive sector and the way we steer the future of the business. Our vision is to redefine the way customers perceive electric and hybrid, and to give everyone in the UAE open access to advanced technologies and new-age, sustainable driving experiences.”
