What is the Jaguar Type 01, and why does it matter?
The Jaguar Type 01 debuted on 7 October 2026 as the first car of Jaguar’s new era. This four-door electric grand tourer is also the first production Jaguar with the brand’s new design approach. Jaguar calls it exuberant modernism. The car follows the Type 00, a design concept that Jaguar showed at Miami Art Week in December 2024. Design, engineering and production all take place in the UK.
Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, summed up the project in one line. “This is a car that refuses to compromise,” he told TCI. In practice, the design would not work on any of Jaguar’s existing architectures. The brand therefore built its own, which it calls Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA.
The car also signals a shift in where Jaguar wants to sit. According to Glover, the new Jaguars will roughly double the average selling price of the brand’s previous range. For him, the new Jaguar is “a value proposition, not a volume proposition”.
Even the name carries a message. “Type” nods to famous Jaguars of the past, while “0” stands for zero tailpipe emissions. Finally, “1” marks the start of a new generation.

What does the Type 01 look like?
The Jaguar Type 01 stretches to 5,235mm in length yet stands only 1,403mm tall. Standard wheels measure 23 inches, and buyers can opt for 21-inch wheels instead. A long bonnet also creates a generous gap between the front axle and the door. Jaguar calls this the luxury gap, and at 898mm it accounts for 17 per cent of total length. That share almost matches the E-Type’s.
Aerodynamics played a big role too. Its drag coefficient of 0.23 makes it the most aerodynamic Jaguar yet. Reaching that figure took more than 7,000 wind tunnel tests. Up front, the headlights stand only 84mm tall, making them Jaguar’s slimmest, and each one packs 17,000 pixels.
One panel shows how hard Jaguar pushed production. The brand’s so-called Impossible Panel, the rear quarter panel, brings five planes together on one aluminium panel. Making it at Halewood takes six pressing stages and 2,500 tons of force.
Buyers can choose from gloss or satin paints. At launch, Jaguar will also offer the Design Vision edition. It pairs Visionary Silver Satin paint with 23-inch Diamond Turned wheels. Inside, its light colour scheme pays tribute to the Type 00. For something rarer, the Chromatic Moments collection adds two hand-crafted colours. French Ultramarine and London Red will appear on just 60 cars worldwide.

What is the Type 01’s cabin like?
A central spine stretches from the front of the cabin to the back, dividing it into four individual spaces. Brass-inspired metal trims then follow the spine and the upper edges of the doors.
Mary Crisp, Chief Materiality Designer at Jaguar, told TCI that these finishers took a great deal of work. Keeping them as true metal, with the essence of the original brass, was, in her words, “a massive win”. She also highlighted the textile flooring, which continues up into the lower doors to encase the occupants. In her view, it gently echoes Jaguar interiors of the past.
The driver faces a 24-inch OLED display. Between the front seats, a seven-inch touchscreen handles climate and audio. In addition, a 38-speaker Meridian system includes a full-width soundbar below the windscreen. The boot holds over 450 litres, or 1,000 litres with the rear seats down.

How powerful is the Jaguar Type 01?
No Jaguar road car has ever had more power than the Jaguar Type 01. One 260kW motor drives the front axle, while two 310kW motors drive the rear. Together, they produce a peak of 1,030PS and 1,365Nm. As a result, the 0-100km/h sprint takes 3.2 seconds.
Jaguar also talks about power in reserve. At a steady 100km/h, for example, the car draws on only two per cent of its total output. From there, it can sprint from 100 to 180km/h in four seconds. In addition, its inverters and traction software draw on lessons from Jaguar TCS Racing, the brand’s Formula E team.

How will the Type 01 drive?
Jaguar wants the car to blend refined comfort with sharp performance. Glover describes it as neither a pure luxury cruiser nor a pure sports car, but a car that does both.
To deliver that, the car pairs an even 50:50 weight split with air suspension and active dampers. All-wheel steering then trims the turning circle to 11.5m, similar to a compact family car. Underneath, the body and battery form the stiffest structure Jaguar has built. Its torsional rigidity reaches 51.7kN per degree.
Jon Darlington, Architecture Chief Engineer at Jaguar, told TCI that the team did not use rival high-performance EVs as targets. Instead, he explained, “what defined the character of the car was those ’60s and ’70s Jags”. The engineers therefore let the body roll naturally rather than holding it completely flat. “Roll is information,” Darlington said, since it tells the driver what the car is doing. In fact, when the team tested an XJC against the Type 01, the two showed almost identical roll behaviour.

What range and charging does the Jaguar Type 01 offer?
A 118kWh usable battery sits under the car, running on an 850-volt system. As a result, Jaguar expects up to 400 miles of EPA range and up to 720km on the WLTP cycle. On long motorway runs at sustained speed, it still manages up to 320 miles.
Charging is quick too. On a 350kW charger, the car can add up to 321km of range in 13 minutes at best. A 10 to 80 per cent top-up, by contrast, takes about 22 minutes. Meanwhile, AC charging runs at up to 22kW.
Inside the battery, a nickel-rich NMC chemistry is unique to Jaguar. According to Darlington, its nickel content tops 90 per cent, against roughly 80 per cent in a typical NMC pack. A cheaper cell, he says, “wouldn’t have been as good”. Jaguar has also tested the car worldwide. Its ThermAssist system moves heat between the battery, motors and cabin, and it works from -40 to +40 degrees. Finally, Jaguar backs the battery with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty.

When can you buy the Jaguar Type 01, and how much will it cost?
Jaguar has not announced prices for the Jaguar Type 01 yet, including for the UAE. However, Glover offers a guide to where the new Jaguars will sit. He puts the expected average selling price at around GBP 125,000 to GBP 130,000 in the UK. In Europe, he expects EUR 150,000 to EUR 160,000.
Orders should open in early 2027. After that, Jaguar expects to hand over the first cars in the latter half of the year.
